YES와 NO의 대답이 문제되는 것은 바로 부정의문문의 경우입니다.
일상 대화의 대답에서 가장 많이 사용되는 것이 Yes와 No이지만
부정의문문의 경우, 우리 말의 관습대로 대답하면 전달하고자 하는
의미와는 정반대의 뜻이 되고 맙니다.
우리 말의 '예./아니오.'와 영어의 'Yes/No.'사이에 존재하는 사
고 방식의 차이를 알아 두어야 됩니다.

우리말에서 "예."/"아니오."는 '상대가 말한 것'에 대한 긍정,부정
을 나타냅니다. 그러므로 상대가 부정으로 물어 보았더라도 "너의 말
을 긍정한다."는 의미로 "예."를 쓰고, 그 반대의 경우에 "아니오"를
쓰는 것입니다. 그런데 영어에서는 상대가 부정으로 물었던지 아니던
지 '자신의 의지'가 긍정이면 "Yes." 부정이면 "No."가 됩니다.
다시 말해서 ▶ 앞의 영어 예문은 대답이 모두 틀린 것입니다.
영화를 보러 가기 싫은 '자신의 의지'를 나타내기 위해서는 " No "를
써야 맞고, 파티에 갔었다는 긍정적인 '자신의 의지'를 나타내기 위
해서는 " Yes. "를 써야 옳은 것이며, 파티에 갈 수 없는 부정적인
' 그의 의지'를 나타내기 위해서는 "No."로 대답해야 옳은 것입니다.

그러나 영국과 미국은 모두 명사 앞에서는 sick 만 씁니다. a sick person 환자 (O), a ill person (X)
또한 집합적으로 '환자들'에는 'the sick' 만을 사용합니다.
마지막으로 숙어에서도 병용하지는 않습니다. sick at heart 마음이 울적하여, 비관하여, 괴로워서. 그러나 ill at heart 라고는 하지 않습니다.

Ｑ： 방학 동안 영한 대역 문고를 보다가 last name에 대한 언급을 본
적이 있습니다. 미국의 유명한 작곡가인 민요의 왕인 Foster 의 성이
나무꾼 출신이라는 뜻을 가진 foster에서 나온 것이라고 하더군요. 서
양에서는 직업에서 성을 따온 경우가 많다고 하던데 그 유래를 몇가지
예를 들어서 설명을 해 주십시요.
Ａ：앞 집 John과 옆 집의 John을 구별하기 위해서 생겨난 last name
은 말 그대로 뒤에 붙는 이름입니다. 영어식 이름으로는 first name,
middle name, 그리고 last name으로 구별이 되는데 first name은 사람
의 이름이고 middle name은 중간 이름, 그리고 last name은 김씨나 박
씨와 같은 성을 뜻합니다. 그런데 여기서 주의해야 할 것은 오성식 이
라고 할 때 '오'가 last name 이지만 '성'이 middle name이 되는 것이
아니라 '성식'이 first name 입니다. 우리 나라에서는 middle name이
없습니다. 그런데 중세 초 까지만 해도 last name이 존재하지 않았다
고 합니다. first name만 있었다고 하지요. 그런데 한 마음에 같은 이
름을 가진 사람이 여러 명이 생기면서 last name이 탄생하기 시작했는
데 이를 때면 어떤 마을에 목수 일을 하는 John과 강가에 사는 John이
살고 있었다고 하면 사람들은 항상 두 사람을 혼동했겠지요. 그래서
생각 끝에 목수 있을 하는 사람들 John The Carpenter 라고 부르고 강
가에 사는 사람을 John Of The River 라고 불렀다고 합니다. 시간이
흐르면서 이들은 좀 더 간단하게 John Carpenter 또는 John River라고
이름을 짓게 되었다고 하지요. 서양의 이름은 이렇게 직업, 지명, 사
람의 생김새나 성격, 그리고 아버지의 이름에서 따 온 것이 많습니다.
예를 들어서, 직업에서 가져온 last name에는 Cook (요리사), Tailor
(재단사), Clerk (목사), Smith (대장장이) 등이 있고 지명에서 따 온
last name으로는 Norman (노르만디 사람), Moor (황무지에서 온 사람)
Hall (큰 현관이 있는 집에 사는 사람), Street (큰 길에 사는 사람)
Chesterfield (체스터필드에서 왔거나 사는 사람) .. 이런 식으로 지
명에서 따온 경우가 있고 생김새나 성격을 나타내는 last name 에서는
Long (키가 큰), Moody (변덕스러운), Brown (피부색이 그으른), Fox
(여우같은), Young (젊은), Rich (부자) 등등이 있습니다. 마지막으로
아버지 이름에서 따온 last name에는 아버지의 이름 뒤에 아들을 뜻하
는 son을 붙인 경우인데 단순히 -s 를 붙여서 이것을 표시하기도 했지
요. 아이의 이름만 단독으로 사용하는 성도 있고요. 예를 들어서 Robe
-rtson은 Robert와 son이 합쳐진 말입니다. 즉, 로버트의 아들이라는
말입니다. 또 이것을 Roberts 라고 해서 변형이 가능했지요. Roberts
를 그냥 last name으로 사용하기도 하고요. 그러다 보니까 흑인 이름
가운데에도 이름이 white인 경우도 있고요. 재미 있습니다.

'장승' is a post made of either wood or stone that was usually
placed in a pair at the entrances to villages temples and at roa-
dsides.
장승은 나무나 돌로 만든 푯말로써 보통 장승 한 쌍이 마을이나 신전
의 입구나 길가에 세워져 있잖아요.
We can hardly find any 장승 nowadays you know it's really hard to
find thme. But it's still a part of the Korean folk tradition.
요즘은 장승 보는 일이 사실 그렇게 쉽지 않지만 장승은 여전히 한국
민속 전통의 하나이지요.
The top portion of one of the poles was carved into a figure res-
embling a male face and several Chinese characters meaning. The
Great General Under Heaven (천하대장군) were inscribed on this
pole as well.
한 쌍의 장승중에서 하나의 꼭대기에는 남자의 얼굴을 닮은 형태와 천
하 대장군을 뜻하는 몇 자의 한자가 새겨져 있지요.
On the other pole was a figure resembling a female face and the
Chinese characters that stand for The Female General Under Ground
(지하여장군) were inscribed on it.

If you're still having trouble picturing '장승' try to imagine a
totem pole with the aforementioned descriptions instead of the
animal figures.

A pair of '장승' was erected in front of villages temples and at
roadsides to keep off evil spirits and to ensure good fortune and
prosperity to all residents.

To make certain of their good fortune villagers held ceremonies
in honor of the spirits that resided in the two posts.

remonies.

ety during a long journey.

The process of erecting a 장승 was ritualistic and a huge task in
in itself.

Firstly the raising of these posts were allowed only during the
lunar leap months that occur only once every three years.
먼저 이러한 장승은 매 3년마다 한번씩 오는 윤달에만 있습니다.
To complicate things further the carving and the placement of the
wooden posts had to be performed on the same day.
이를 더 복잡하게 만드는 것은 나무에 모양을 새겨서 장승을 만든 다
음에 세우는 것도 바로 같은 날 해야만 하기 때문입니다.
Oh this day every single villager participated.
이 날은 마을 사람들 모두가 참여를 하게 되지요.
Women prepared the food that was to be offered to 산신 that means
mountain spirit during the ceremony while men cleaned the area
where the posts were to be erected and cut and carved the trees
that became 장승.
여자들은 제사 때 산신에게 바칠 음식을 장만하고 남자들은 장승이 세
워질 곳을 청결히 하고 장승이 될 나무를 골라서 문양을 새깁니다.
In most cases pine trees were used but sometimes chestnut and al-
der trees were used as well.
대부분의 경우는 소나무가 사용되지만 때에 따라서는 밤나무, 오리 나
무도 사용이 된다고 합니다.
Its exact origins are not known but it seems to have been preval-
ent during the mid eighth century.

Interestingly the distance between villages was measured not from
the center of one to the other but from the 장승 of one village
to the 장승 of another.

Normal value is the term applied to the adjusted price of the foreign like product in the home or
third-country (comparison) market, or to the constructed value of the subject merchandise. The
Department compares the normal value to the export price or constructed export price to
determine the margin of dumping, if any.

The Department initially seeks to calculate normal values based on price. If there are adequate
sales in the home market (see Viability), the Department calculates normal value based on the
price at which the foreign like product is first sold (generally, to unaffiliated parties) in that
market. In the absence at a usable home market, and if there are adequate sales in a third-country
market, the Department calculates normal value based on the price at which the foreign like
product is first sold (generally, to unaffiliated parties) in the third-country market. If there are no
appropriate home or third-country market sales, the Department determines normal value by
calculating the constructed value.

To ensure that a fair comparison with the export price or constructed export price is made, the
Department makes adjustments to the price used to calculate the normal value. The Department

market price: packing charges, transportation costs, and any internal tax that was rebated or not
collected on the subject merchandise. The Department may make additional adjustments to
account for differences in the conditions under which sales are made in the United States and the

for differences in quantities, physical characteristics of the merchandise, levels of trade, and other

정상가격은 수출국내 혹은 제3국(비교대상)시장의 외국동종물품의
조정된 가격에 적용되거나 조사대상물품의 구성가격에 적용되는 용어
이다. 상무부는 정상가격을 수출가격 또는 구성수출가격과 비교하여
덤핑률을 결정하게 된다.

상무부는 처음에는 가격에 기초한 정상가격을 찾게 된다. 만약 적절한
