[比較] alliance, league, coalition
alliance(결연, 동맹)는 특히 가족이나 국가의 이해 관계의 결합에 쓰인다. 또한 일반 용법에서는 조직된 것이든 아니든 서로 다른 단체들 사이의 상호 이익을 위한 관계에도 사용된다.

league(연맹)는 흔히 alliance와 바꿔 쓰이지만 보통 alliance보다 정식적인 맹약 또는 한층 명확한 목적임을 암시한다. 그리고 alliance와 달리 나쁜 뜻으로 사용되는 경우가 많다.

coalition(연합, 합동)은 이해가 상반되고 대립될 당파나 파벌 따위가 일시적으로 동맹하는 것을 가리킨다.

[比較] suspect, surmise, suppose, suspicion
suspect는 경멸적인 뜻을 가진 말로, 충분하지 않은 증거를 가지고서 또는 전혀 증거 없이 ‘(죄가 있다고, 거짓이라고, 가짜라고, 바람직하지 않다고, 흠이 있다고, 나쁘다고) 상상하다’를 의미한다.
They suspected him of cheating at cards, but there was nothing to justify an open accusation./ He suspected that there was sabotage in connection with the fire.
surmise에는 suspect같이 추한 함축된 뜻은 없다. 다만 확실한 또는 강력한 증거도 없이 ‘생각하다, 추측하다’의 뜻이다.
I surmised that you were his son from your striking resemblance to him. suspect는 surmise의 뜻을 나타낼 수도 있지만, 나쁜 뜻을 나타내려고 하지 않는 경우에는, 후자가 모호하지 않으므로 그것을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
suppose는 참이든 아니든 관계없이, 논의를 위해서 또는 결론을 찾아내기 위해서 ‘추측하다, 생각으로 기울다, 관념을 가지다’, 또한 가설적으로 ‘가정하다’는 의미이다.
Do you suppose that she wished to remain unmarried?/ The roads were no better than the old had supposed./ All right, suppose we do give him the money? What will happen then?
suspicion은 ‘의심, 미심, 수상함’의 의미하는 명사지만, 무식한 이들이 흔히 동사로 쓰는 수가 있다. 물론 비표준적 용법이며, 표준용법에서는 suspect를 써야 한다.
I suspicioned he wasn't a real doctor from the very beginning.

자세한 설명
1. 「그의 꿍꿍이는 도대체 무엇일까?」라고 하는 표현은 자주
사용되는데 그 표현에 연구가 필요하다. 「그의 진심은
무엇일까?」, 「그의 의도는 무엇일까?」로 처리하면 좋다.
(1) 아무래도 그의 뱃속을 알 수 없다.
I just cannot understand him.
(2) 지금에 와서 의중을 떠보아도 소용없다.
It is no use now trying to read each other's thought.
(3) 그는 그 남자를 그만두게 하려는 심사이다.
He is thinking of dismissing the man
=His intention is to dismiss the man.
(4) 그들은 그 쪽이 중요하다고 마음 속으로 정하고 있다.
They've made up their minds that it is more important.
2. 「사람에 따라서 다르다」는 「사람에 따라서 생각이나 의견이
다르다」로 처리해서 표현하면 좋다.
(1) 그러나 이것은 사람에 따라서 의견을 달리 할 지도 모른다.
This, however, is a matter upon which opinions may differ.
(2) 군축 노선에 대해서는 국민들 사이에서 의견이 제각각이다.
Opinions may differ among the nations as to a course for
