^^The violent students have mistaken ways of thinking in two respects.
The first is their hewing to an ideological line benefiting the enemy,
which is proscribed by the National Security Law. The second is their
use of violence to pursue their goals, physically challenging riot police, a
symbol of government authority, by beating them and throwing
firebombs at them.

Stringent legal punishment alone falls short of grappling with the
problem of misguided student activists. As a fundamental solution to the

strengthening in ideological education to show young people the

However, although the government has never stopped emphasizing the
importance of ideological education, the effects have not been substantial.
Anti-communist education in particular was perverted by the
authoritarian regimes' exploitation of it as a form of political
indoctrination to perpetuate their grip on power.

political parties have also declined to face squarely a perennial student
problem that has been worsened by the expansion of student networks
and the sharpening of their ideological armament. No one has wanted to
