As a nation, the United States has doubled its living standard in the last 50 years.
Now Americans enjoy the fruits of an economy that provides not only basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter but also seemingly limitless luxuries.
If you doubt this, spend some time in other countries; the bountiful and luxurious nature of America's standard of living will be quite apparent.
At no other time in history have Americans experienced such along ride of high living.
The vast majority of people in the United States maintain a standard of living that far exceeds that of other countries.
Yet, notwithstanding such economic growth and material abundance,
the percentage of Americans who rate themselves as very happy has decreased since the 1950s.
