She let the Chinese friend decide whether or not to mention it.
She was being considerate by not imposing, which was the American style.
But Mae, based on the Chinese style, couldn't understand why her roommate didn't care.
중국인 유학생인 Mae가 얼굴에 멍이 든 채 기숙사 방에 나타났다.
그녀는 미국인 룸메이트가 그 상처에 대해 전혀 언급하지 않았기 때문에 무시당했다는 느낌을 받았다.
그 다친 학생은 말없는 그녀의 룸메이트가 알아차리지 못했거나 관심이 없다고 생각했다.
그러나 미국인 학생은 Mae가 그 일에 대해 이야기하기를 원하지 않을 수도 있다고 생각하여 의도적으로 주의를 기울이지 않았다.
그녀는 섣불리 나서지 않음으로써 상대를 배려했던 것인데 그것이 미국적인 방식이었다.
그러나 Mae는 중국적인 방식에 근거하여 그녀의 룸메이트가 왜 관심이 없는지를 이해할 수 없었다.
