Going from the lowest level of charity to the highest, here are the eight levels:

1. He who gives unwillingly.
마지 못해 주는자.
2. He who gives cheerfully, but not enough.
유쾌하게 주지만 충분히 주지 않는자.
3. He who gives enough, but not until he is asked.

4. He who gives before being asked, but gives directly to the poor man.

5. The poor man knows from whom he takes, but the giver does not know who is receiving.

8. The highest form of charity is to strengthen the hand of the poor man by giving him a loan, joining him in partnership, or training him out of his poverty, to help him establish himself.

Born in Berlin in 1929, Previn studied at the Berlin conservatory for
three years before his family fled to America to escape the persecution of
Jews. They arrived in California "dead broke." and Previn did everything
from demonstrating electric organs to playing for dance classes to help
out.

Whenever someone speaks with prejudice against a group―Catholics, Jews,
Italians, Negroes―someone else usually comes up with a classic line of
defence: "Look at Einstein!" "Look at Carver!" "Look at Toscanini!"
They mean well, these defenders. But their approach is wrong. It is even
bad. What a minority group wants is not the right to have geniuses among
them but the right to have fools and scoundrels without being condemned
as a group.

The Second World War mobilized the Germans in more than one sense. Not
only did the majority of the male population swarm out as far as the
North Cape and the Caucasus, not to mention nearly the whole Jewish
population who were forced into emigration and death, but Germany also
abducted as many as ten million laborers, a third of them women, from
all over Europe, so that thirty per cent of all jobs, and in the
armaments industry more than half, were done by foreigners. After the
war, there were millions of displaced persons; only very few remained in
Germany. Compared to these catastrophic movements all contemporary
turbulences appear harmless.
