→ 'Nil'은 무언가를 원치 않는다는 뜻의 고대어인데 Will I? Nil I?가 변천되어 현재에 이름.
- fuddy-duddy: 변함이 없는 사람(someone who doesn't like change)
ex) Mr. Lee never goes anywhere new, always wears a tie, eats the same food every day, and is in bed by nine o'clock. He's a real fuddy-duddy.
- hush-hush: 비밀스러운(secret)
ex) She works for the government, but nobody knows exactly what she does. Her job is very hush-hush.
- mumbo jumbo: 사투리, 이해하기 힘든 말(language that cannot easily be understood, jargon)
ex) Have you tried to read and understand all that mumbo jumbo in the insurance policy?
- wishy-washy: 우유부단한, 약한(undecided, weak, not definite and clear)
ex) My boss is very wishy-washy. He has trouble deciding who should do what, and he doesn't give clear orders.
- wheeler-dealer: 수완가, 책략가(a person who is always making business deals and trying to get the best deal)
ex) Mr. Park is big-time wheeler-dealer in real estate. He keeps buying and selling stores and hotels all over the country.
[比較] what ever, whatever
(a) 의문사: what ever는 의문사 what의 강조형으로 ‘무식한 또는 극히 구어적인’ 용법에 속하고, What ever can it mean?(대체 무슨 말이냐?), What ever shall we do?(대체 어떻게 해야 할까?) 같은 글은 구어적인 대화를 그대로 옮겨 놓는 경우 이외에는 글에 쓰여서는 안되며, 반드시 두 낱말로 떼어놓아야 한다. whatever를 의문사로 이용해서, Whatever have you done?(대체 무슨 일을 저질러 놓았느냐?)처럼 하는 것은 그릇된 용법이다.
(b) 관계사: whatever는 복합관계사 what의 강조형으로, all that, any(thing) that(～인 것은 모두, ～인 것은 무엇이나)를 의미한다.
Eat whatever you like./ Whatever is left over is yours.
또한 형용사로도 쓰인다.
Whatever request you make will be granted.(네가 요구하는 것은 무엇이든 들어주겠다.)
형용사로 쓰이는 경우 더 한층 강조하기 위해 any, no 따위로 수식된 명사 다음에 자리를 잡아, for any reason whatever(여하한 이유로든지)처럼 할 수 있다. for whatever reason보다 뜻이 강하다.

(c) whatever는 또한 양보절을 도입하는 경우에도 쓰인다.
Whatever happens, we'll meet here tonight./ Whatever man told you that, it is not true.
여기의 whatever는 관계사로 쓰일 때의 whatever와 용법이 다르지만, 그 차이는 별로 크지 않다. 따라서 whatever he has done he repents와 같은 글은 ⓐ 일을 다르게 했었더라면 좋았을 것을 하고 뉘우치는 우유부단한 사람을 가리켜서 ‘그는 자기가 한 일을 모두 후회하고 있다’를 의미할 수도 있고, ⓑ 큰 죄를 범한 사람일지도 모르지만 중요한 것은 후회한다는 사실이다를 가리켜서 ‘무슨 일을 했든지, 그는 후회하고 있다’를 의미할 수도 있다. ⓑ는 양보를 나타내는 절로, whatever-clause 끝에 콤마를 두면 ⓐ와 혼동될 염려가 있다.(ⓐ의 경우에는 콤마가 쓰이지 못한다)
