미녀와 야수(Beauty and Beast) 아시죠?
animal도 있고 brute도 있는데 왜 하필 beast라고 했는지 궁금하지 않으세요?
그것은 두운(alliteration)을 살리기 위해서 입니다.
'Sally sells sea shells by the seashore.'도 두운을 살린 표현이죠.
그런데 소리내어 읽으려니 혀가 꼬이죠(tongue twister)
주인공인 Belle은 당연히 불어로 '미녀'라는 뜻이죠. 영어로도 쓰입니다.
촛대(candlestick)인 Lumiere도 기억나시죠. 영어로 luminous가 '밝은, 빛을 내는'이죠.
시계인 Cogsworth도 기억나십니까? cog는 톱니바퀴의 '톱니'입니다.
시계의 톱니가 움직이는 거 보면 우리는 사회라는 단체의 하나의 톱니에
지나지 않는다는 생각이 들죠.
그래서 a cog in the machine이 큰 조직 안에서 일하는 사람의 의미도 있죠.

chip은 식기, 컵, 판자 등의 '이 빠진(깨진)자국, 흠'을 의미합니다.

접시에 이가 나갔어요.
chip이 들어간 몇 가지 표현을 알아보면
낡은 덩어리에서 떨어진 chip off the old block은 아버지를 꼭 닮은 아들.
He had a chip on his shoulder. 어깨 위에 벽돌 같은 덩어리가 떨어지면
얼마나 화가 나겠어요.
그래서 have a chip on one's shoulder는 '화가 나다, 살기가 등등하다'입니다.
도박(gamble)에서 쓰는 chip 중에서 blue chip은 좋은 거라나요
그래서 주식시장(stock market)에서 우량주를 나타냅니다.
'chip in'은 하고 있는 말을 중간에 깨고 들어오는 거니까 '말참견하다'는 의미가 있죠.
또, 돈을 각자 조금씩 깨어 넣는다는 의미에서 '기부하다'는 의미도 있습니다.
