◆ boyfriend 와 lover 의 차이
직역하면 boyfriend 는 남자친구, lover 는 연인이 되겠지요.
같은 뜻으로 생각하고 사용할 수도 있겠지만, '이 사람이 내 남자친구(애인)이야'
라고 말 할 때는 주의를 기울여야 합니다.
실질적으로 미국 사람들에게 boyfriend 는 (여성의) 좋아하는 남자친구,
우리가 흔히 말하는 애인을 나타내고, lover 는 regular sexual partner,
일상적으로 성관계를 갖는 상대자 란 의미가 있습니다.
무심코 'We are lovers.' 라고 하면 '우리는 종종 육체관계가 있는 사이다.' 라고
다른 사람들이 오해할 수도 있겠죠?
따라서 여성이 남자친구를 표현하는 무난한 단어는 boyfriend 이고, 반대로 남성의
여자친구는 girlfriend 입니다.
이성 친구라 할지라도 사귀는 남자친구나 여자친구가 아닌 그냥 친하게 지내는 친구일
경우 boyfriend, girlfriend 가 아닌 friend 라고 하면 됩니다.
동성의 친구를 나타낼 때도 주의를 하셔야 하는데, 그 이유는 boyfriend, girlfriend
라는 단어 속에는 애인이라는 의미가 있으므로, 남자가 자기의 동성친구를 boyfriend
라고 소개하면 두 사람을 한 쌍의 gay couple 이라고 생각할 수 있습니다.
여성의 경우도 마찬가지구요.
A : Is he your boyfriend? (너 그 남자랑 사귀니?)
B : No, he's just my old friend. (아니, 그냥 오랜 친구일 뿐이야.)
사귄다는 의미로 다음의 표현도 많이 씁니다.
