The study of the low-calorie diet has a long history.
In the 1930s, Clive McCay, a nutritionist, discovered that rats deprived of food lived longer and looked younger than rats on a normal diet.
Since then, additional studies have shown that in animals from fruit flies to mice,
decreasing food intake by about 30 percent results in a 30 percent increase in life span.
저 칼로리 식이 요법에 대한 연구는 오랜 역사를 가지고 있다.

But there remained some terrible diseases for which no microbe could be
incriminated : scurvy, pellagra, rickets, beriberi. Then it was
discovered that these diseases were caused by the lack of vitamins, a
trace substance in the diet. The diseases could be prevented or cured by
consuming foods that contained the vitamins. And so in the decades of
the 1920's and 1930's, nutrition became a science and the vitamin
hunters replaced the microbe hunters.

Almost daily the public is besieged by claims for "no-aging" diets, new
vitamins, and other wonder foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated
reports that natural vitamins are superior to synthetic ones, that
fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs, that
untreated grains are better than fumigated grains, and the like.
거의 매일같이 대중들은 "불로장생" 음식, 새로운 비타민, 그리고 다른
경이식품 등의 공세를 접하고 있다. 자연적인 비타민이 인공적으로 합성된
비타민보다 우수하다든가 수정란은 무수정란보다 영양학적으로 더

One thing that most organically grown food products seem to have in
common is that they cost more than conventionally grown foods. But in
many cases consumers are misled if they believe organic foods can
maintain health and provide better nutritional quality than
conventionally grown foods. So there is real cause for concern if
consumers, particularly those with limited incomes, distrust the regular
food supply and buy only expensive organic foods instead.
유기적으로 재배된 대부분의 음식상품들이 공통적으로 가진다고 보이는 한
가지는 그들이 종래의 방식으로 재배된 음식들보다 더 비싸다는 것이다.
