At the library, I told the reference librarian I needed information on an
automatic breadmaker. "It's a machine I'm interested in buying that kneads
dough and bakes bread for you, with just the touch of a few buttons,"
I explained.
The librarian shook her head sadly. "There is so much satisfaction in
kneading the dough and watching it rise," she replied. "Why must you young
people have a machine do everything for you? Why can't you do things the
old-fashioned way?"
"Can you just point me to the card catalogue?" I pleaded.
"Card catalogue?" She laughed. "Nobody uses a card catalogue anymore?
Let me take you to the computer index."
도서관에서 참고 열람실 직원에게 자동 제빵기에 관한 정보가 필요하다고 말했다.
"버튼 몇 개만 누르면 밀가루 반죽을 하고 빵을 구워주는 주는 기계를 사고
싶어요." 라고 설명했다.
사서교사는 안됐다는 듯이 머리를 흔들었다. "밀가루 반죽을 하고 그것이
부풀어오르는 것을 보는 것이 아주 즐거운 일인데," 그녀가 대답했다.
"요즘 젊은이들은 왜 모든 일을 기계가 해주기를 바랄까?"
"도서 카드 목록이 있는 곳이 어디입니까?" 나는 간청했다.
"카드 목록이요?" 그녀가 웃었다. "요즘 카드 목록을 사용하는 사람은 없어요.
컴퓨터 색인이 있는 곳으로 안내하겠어요."
