One month has passed since Hanchongnyon, the coalition of
university student councils nationwide, held a grand unification
festival which turned into a nine-day violent rally that ended
with the arrest of 465 students.
지난달 전국 대학 총학생회 연합체인 한총련이 개최한 '통일 축천'
행사는 9일동안 계속 이어진 최악의 폭력 집회로 변질되었고, 마침내
465명의 시위학생들이 대량구속되는 결과를 가져왔다.

Students' Violent Clash With Police : 과격학생시위
^^We deplore the violent clashes that indiscreet student activists had
with riot police from Tuesday in Seoul in connection with the
unauthorized unification festival organized by the federation of student
councils, or Hanchongnyon. We also recognize the inevitability of the
joint direction the three Cabinet members responsible for home affairs,
justice and education issued on Wednesday to deal sternly with the
radical students, sending in riot police and helicopters to fire tear gas
to disperse the militant pipe-wielding students hurling stones and
firebombs.
우리는 지각없는 운동권 학생들이 대학 학생회 연합체인 한총련이 주관한
불법 통일 축제로 인해 화요일 서울에서 전투경찰과 격렬한 충돌을 하게 된
것을 매우 유감으로 생각한다. 우리는 또한 이 사건에 직접적인 책임이 있
는 내무, 법무, 교육부의 3부장관들이, 파이프를 휘두르며 돌과 화염병을 던
지는 운동권 학생들을 해산하기 위해 전투경찰과 헬기를 투입하여 최루탄을
발사하는 등, 운동권 학생들에게 단호히 대처하기 위해, 수요일 공동으로 취
한 조치의 불가피성을 인정한다.

Rigid Control of Violent Students : 폭력 학생들에 대한 강경 조치
^^State prosecutors have decided to break up the violent Hanchongnyon,
or Korean Federation of University Student Councils, which organized
the fierce clashes with police that started eight days ago at Yonsei
University in Seoul, branding it a subversive body that benefits the
enemy (North Korea) and is thus in violation of the National Security
Law.
검찰은 서울 연세대에서 8일전부터 시작한 경찰과의 격렬한 충돌을 주도
했던 폭력적인 한총련, 즉 한국 학생회 연합체가 북한을 이롭게 하여 국가
보안법을 위반한 반정부 이적 단체라고 규정하고 이를 와해시키기로 결정하
였다.

Every parent knows how crucial the choice of friends is for every child.
Childhood friendships tell parents which ways their children are tending.
They are important because good friendships bring you up, and bad
friendships bring you down. So it matters who our children's friends are.
And it matters, as example to our children, who our friends are. Friends
should be allies of our better nature.

친구란 보다 나은 우리의 본성의 연합체 여야 한다.
