「연구개발」은 research and development, R & D로 생략하는
것은 상식인데, 하나의 개념으로 해서 영어에서는 단수로
취급합니다. ex. R & D is essential to the company's success.
동사인 involve는 한국어로 번역하기 어려운 단어 중 하나인데,
「~에 종사하고 있다, ~에 들어있다, ~에 관계하고 있다」의
의미로 사용합니다. 「강조하다, 힘을 쏟다」는 to place (lay,
put) a big (special, particular) emphasis입니다.

Mr. Lee: Yes, we have two research laboratories, one in Seoul
and the other in Pusan.
Mr. West: What do they do?
Mr. Lee: The research in Seoul is on manufacturing techniques
and processes, while the one in Pusan mainly deals with basic
theory and materials.
Mr. West: How many people are involved in R & D?
Mr. Lee: About 100 in Seoul, and 200 in Pusan.
Mr. West: And what about the budget?
Mr. Lee: I'd say about 15% of annual profits. We place a big
emphasis on R & D, which is the key to our success in future.

알아둘 일
연구개발은 어느 회사에 있어서도 규모의 대·소를 가릴 것 없이
무척 힘을 쏟는 분야인데 외국에서 온 visitors에 있어서는 어느
정도의 인원이 어떤 문제를 다루고 있는가, 지금 관심의 목표는
무엇인가, 경쟁회사와의 관계는 어떠한가, 신제품의 개발과
기초연구의 관계, 기술 정보의 관리, 기술 수출의 가능성 등등
화제는 끝이 없습니다. 대략적인 설명이 가능하도록 조사해 둘
필요가 있으며, 연구소의 대표에게 설명을 부탁하는 것도
좋습니다.

여기에서는 「전혀 문제가 없다」라는 뜻입니다. split the cost
of ~ 「~의 비용을 절감하다」로 to share the cost of ~와 거의
같습니다. 「관행·평소의 행동방식」은 standard practice
custom, traditional method 등으로 말할 수도 있습니다. to
begin with는 at first, at the outset, in the beginning과 거의
같으며 「처음으로, 최초로」의 관용구입니다.

알아둘 일
연구개발비용의 분담에 관한 대화인데 종합비용에 대한
분담보다는 우선 세목을 정하고 그 세목에 대한 비용을
분담하자고 하는 반론이 나온 것입니다. 총론보다는 각론을
중시하는 느낌인데, 서구적인 발상에서는 구체적인 세목이 있고
나서야 비로소 의논이 가능합니다. 한국적인 발상인 총론에 우선
찬성하고 그리고 나서 각론을 의논한다 라는 것은 조금 방식이
다릅니다. 서로간의 의견에 접근하기 위해서는 구체적으로
의논하는 편이 받아드리기도 쉽고 수습도 잘 됩니다.
