You'll find the unknown word comes again, perhaps several times, and by the end of the chapter you'll have guessed its meaning.
That's how we learn the meaning of words in our own language, isn't it?
When I'm telling a story to children, they seldom stop to ask what a word means.
Even when they read, they don't run for the dictionary every time they see an unknown word.
When I read my New York Times these days I often find articles about space programs.
There are sometimes words I don't know ―and some of them are so new that they're not yet in the dictionaries.
But I'm slowly beginning to understand what some of the words mean ― simply by meeting them so often.

Asians are spending more time at the computer.
According to a recent survey, 60 percent of Singaporeans now have computers in their homes.
But all that keyboard time shouldn't kill good penmanship.
Kids, in particular, should be encouraged to write by hand.
Here are a few ideas to help you and your family write right.
Keep stationary, paper and good quality pens around the house to make writing easier.
Write a letter by hand.
E-mail is fast and easy, but a written letter is more meaningful.

Puppies and kittens can be a dream for children.
However, pets that are mistreated can become suspicious of humans and more likely to bite when they grow up, says a vet in Malaysia.

Lead poisoning is a serious problem in our daily lives.
Especially, young children are at the greatest risk of lead poisoning because their bodies are still developing.
Lead poisoning can cause learning disabilities and hearing loss.
It can also cause behavioral problems, at very high levels coma and even death.
Some of those problems may not show up until later in life.

Of course, in any society, there are bound to be some negative attributes.
Parents should point out the negative factors prevailing in any society to warn their children, for children are not always able to recognize something bad.
But in doing so, parents should be careful not to focus on the negatives too much, which can wipe out the positives.

Many of these casualties are among the nation's most precious resources, our children.
Even more troubling is the fact that many of these deaths could have been prevented had the smoke detectors been operating.

This belief in the powers of "blue" still exists in some parts of the world today.
In the Middle East, Arabs often paint the doors of their houses blue to frighten away demons.
They also dress young children in blue to protect them from these evil forces.

Some people think that the best time to begin studying a foreign language is in childhood, and that the younger you are, the easier it is to learn another language.
There is little evidence, however, that children in language classrooms learn foreign languages any better than adults (people over age 15) in similar classroom situations.
In fact, adults have many advantages over children: better memories, more efficient ways of organizing information, better study habits, and greater ability to handle complex mental tasks.
In addition, adults are often better motivated than children: they see learning a foreign language as necessary for education or career.

Society seems to want to constrict childhood more and more.
Perhaps it has to do with not wanting to be care-givers anymore because we're too busy or fearful.

Children need someone to reassure them that play―their own, unique, imaginative play―is something to be valued.

Children need to be valued for who they are, where they are, and not for something in the future.

While the medical profession has conquered most of the childhood diseases,
boys and girls seem to be afflicted, as much as ever, with whatever it is that
prevents them from being sleepy at bedtime.

Most people have covered the windowpanes of their homes or apartments with
thick black paper or tinfoil, in order to keep the lights on during the blackout. The
reason is not so much the fear of air strikes as the noisy urging of young people and
children who act as self-appointed civil defense wardens. The briefest glimpse of light
from a window starts a chorus of "Turn it off" from a dozen directions.

The Assiniboins were thrifty people who utilized all of their dead prey: (the meat
was their food; their clothing came from the hides; their tools and weapons came from
the bones and horns. Once the other parts had been diposed of, the children used the
buffalo's ribs as sleds.)

And the people's affection for Washington shows in more indirect circumstances
still-in those quiet, unguarded moments visitors and residents as well set aside
words like access and power and amble among the monuments as subconscious
patriots. Children are more demonstrative. They shout up at Lincoln's capacious
ears, or take the Capitol three steps at a clip, acting as if they owned the place.
They cannot take the Capitol these days. Piles of wood lie on the steps, where
workmen are (hammering together) the viewing stands for the Inauguration.
clip: a rapid pace 빠른 걸음.

Sometimes slowness and depth of response are intimately connected.
Time is required in order to digest impressions, and translate them into
substantial ideas. The 'slow but sure' person, whether man or child, is
one in whom impressions sink and accumulate, so that thinking is done at
a deeper level of value than by those with a lighter load.
Many a child is rebuked for slowness, for not answering promptly, when
his forces are taking time to gather themselves together to deal
effectively with the problem at hand. In such cases, failure to afford
time and leisure encourages, if it does not actually create, habits of
speedy, but snapshot and superficial, judgment.

There is no doubt that our education does not meet high standards in such
basic skills as mathematics and language. And we realize that our
youngsters are ignorant of Latin, put Mussolini in the same category as
Dostoevski and cannot recite the Periodic Table by heart. Would we,
however, prefer to fill the developing minds of our children with
hundreds of geometry problems or the names of all the rivers in the
world? Do we really want to frustrate their opportunities for
self-expression ?

Recently, I was in a restaurant when a woman and a young boy sat down
at the neighboring table. I happened to hear their conversation, The
woman asked: "So, how have you been?". And the boy, no more than seven
or eight years old, replied, "Frankly, I've been a little depressed
lately." This remained in my mind because it strengthened my belief that
children were changing. As I remember, my friend and I didn't realize we
were "depressed" until high school. The proof of a change in children has
been increasing steadily. Children don't seem childlike anymore. Children
speak, dress, and behave more like adults than in the past. Little girls
wearing earrings and designer dresses are not uncommon. Boys wearing
hairs styles like movie stars aren't rare anymore. These changes are not
without reason. In the past, children learned the secrets of adulthood
very slowly. Today, however, TV, computers, and the media are pushing
children into adult roles. Indeed, the amount of information available to
children is quickening the beginning of adulthood.

(The Moral Intelligence of Children)에서 나온 말.
SQ(Social Quotient) CQ(Charisma Quotient)
DQ(Development Quotient)등이 생겨나면서 Q측정기관까지 성업하고 있다.

He focused on diarrhea, because, says Arntzen, “diarrheal diseases kill at least 2 million people in the world every year, most of them children.”
And he chose tomatoes because greenhouse-grown tomatoes can't easily pass their altered genes to other crops and because tomato-processing equipment is relatively cheap.
It would be easier still just to take whole tomatoes and eat them, but that could be a disaster, says Arntzen.
Individual tomatoes come in different sizes with varying levels of protein, and uniformity of dosage is key to an effective vaccine.
Arntzen hopes to test his tomato juice on animals within the year, with human trials to follow.

There are about 10,000,000 children under five years old who need care
while their mothers work. Relatives care for about half of these
preschool children. The other half is looked after by people outside of
the family. Some working mothers hire baby-sitters to come into their
homes. However, this choice is too expensive for many people.

Clean living isn't always a good thing for young children.
Research is definitely pointing to dirty kids being healthier kids, and growing up to be healthier adults.
You don't want them to eat dirt, obviously, but a little bit of garden soil shouldn't hurt.
Dirt, it seems, isn't necessarily dirty, and bacteria aren't all bad.

Kids' `Control' Classes to Drop Cholesterol
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Getting 9-year-olds to jump rope, play tag
and listen to tips on healthy eating significantly lowered
their cholesterol levels after just two months.
Alas, 9 is not too early to worry about cholesterol, and a
new study shows a simple school program that stresses an
active physical education class can help set children on a
healthier path to adulthood.

Doctors have increasing evidence that heart disease takes
root in early childhood. Autopsies of young children killed
in accidents have found their arteries already clogging with
the fat. And the risks are on the rise: Studies show more and
more children are obese, and fewer exercise; some schools
even have cut back on gym class.
Researchers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill,
studied 422 third_ and fourth-graders around the state who
got little physical activity and were obese or had high
cholesterol.

The children's cholesterol levels averaged 179 _ borderline
high, equivalent to a level of 200 in an adult. For an adult
at that level, doctors would prompt prescribe serious diet
and exercise and occasionally medication. (More dangerous
cholesterol levels are 200 in a child, equal to 240 in an
adult.)
The children were divided into three groups. In one, teachers
taught healthy nutrition habits during regular classes two
days a week, plus gym class that kept kids moving for 20 full
minutes, three times a week.

Kids who got nurses' instruction had cholesterol drops of 10
points _ showing, surprisingly, that the classroom-based
program was more effective.
"I was very surprised," said Harrell, a UNC nursing
professor."I was convinced the nurses would do better."

Jeonbuk National University Hospital released these letters on the 11th and expressed gratitude to the children.

As Children, who were considered relatively safe from COVID-19 compared to the elderly, also have seen a red flag on their health, Governor Andrew Cuomo asked parents to pay extra attention to their children.

However, children must pay attention to the amount of toothpaste, as they tend to swallow it.

There were many children and teenagers who held their mother's hand in the building, and small bicycles for children were standing in front of the building.

Initially, COVID-19 was called a "Boomer Killer" because of its high fatality rate in elderly patients, but if it causes such serious complications in children, the situation becomes serious.

Our Children's Medical Foundation, Woori Children's Hospital, held two children's doctor experience events on November 6 and 13, where children can experience pediatricians and dentists.

Especially for children with weak immune systems, more specialized care is required for prevention.

Marking its 11th anniversary this year, the World Hand Washing Day was established on October 15, 2008 at the U.N. General Assembly to reduce the unfortunate sacrifices of children around the world from various infectious diseases.

CNN pointed out, "Like those who have lost their jobs, children are victims of the worst public health crisis in the last 100 years," and "Many children have already been deprived of their important chances of education for weeks."

``We've got to get kids interested,'' Morgan said. ``How do we impact
the next generation of inventors? The challenge is to get enough people
interested to make a contribution. They don't have to be the inventor.''

A:What do you usually do after work?
B:Me? I usually kick back on my favorite chair and watch video movie

A:I usually spend a lot of time with my 8-year-old son. He likes to
talk with me, and he often shoots questions at me.
B:What kind of questions does he ask you?
A:Sometimes serious ones, and other times ridiculous ones.
B:Ridiculous ones? Like what?
A:Um… like… "Why doesn't a lamb shrink, whereas wool clothes do, w

A:글쎄요…

'have an edge on'이라는 표현이 있는데,이에는 '∼보다 더 우세하다'라는
A:I'm rooting for the LA Dodgers.
B:Do you think they will win this game?
A:I bet they'll make it this time. I think they have an edge on the
Yanks in pitching and batting.
B:It's a different matter,but I think you didn't fork over the money
you borrowed from me last week.
A:That's right. why?
B:Pay it back to me right now.
A:It seems like you're on the edge of beating up.
A:맞아.
<어구풀이>
root for:응원하다
Yanks:Yankees
fork over:돈을 갚다
be on the edge of:∼하려는 참이다,막∼하려고 하다.
