* college와 university의 차이점은?
school of management : 경영대학
school of education : 사범대학

The two snakes that you are most likely to encounter around your home or garden are the Common Garter snake and the Eastern Ribbon snake.
At first glance it is difficult to tell them apart.
Here are a few clues.
The Garter snake has two rows of black spots.
His tail also isn't as long as that of the Ribbon snake.
The Ribbon snake by contrast has a tail that is about a third of its total length.
Measure the length by starting from the end of the tip to where the snake's body width stops widening.
The Ribbon snake also has three yellow stripes that run the length of his body.

Two thirds of all missions to Mars have failed.
One reason there have been so many failures is that there have been so many attempts.
We have been trying to go to Mars for 40 years.
Another reason is that getting to Mars is hard.
To get there, spirit and Opportunity, the two Mars Exploration Rovers had to fly through
about 483 million kilometers of deep space and target a very precise spot to land.
The space environment isn't friendly.
If getting to Mars is hard, landing there is even harder.

Good jugglers make juggling look so easy that it is difficult to imagine all the physics that comes into play.
Gravity has a significant effect on the number of objects juggled.
Each ball must be thrown high enough to allow the juggler time to handle the other balls.
While throwing higher gives the juggler extra time, it also increases the risk of error.
Juggling low, on the other hand, requires the juggler to catch and throw quickly, also increasing the risk of error.
The need for speed or height will change dramatically as the number of objects being juggled increases.

Robert: Do you think e-mail is convenient to use?
Sophia: I'm afraid not. It can take time to check and clear my e-mail box.
And it is wasteful of my time. Sometimes, the lines are busy, and it's difficult to log on.

Blindness is one of the most difficult of human handicaps because our eyes are so important to our learning.
One thing making education possible and life more pleasant for the blind is the development of a system by which they are able to learn to read.
Since the blind cannot use their eyes, they are taught to use the sense of touch in their fingers.
Reading raised printed matter of the common type is very, very difficult.
The special system now used was invented by Charles, and perfected by Louis Braille.

Archibald Spooner was well known in England for his slips of the tongue.
He was a teacher at Oxford University and a clergyman as well.
Dr. Spooner suffered from nervousness and poor eyesight.
This may have made it difficult for him to see words correctly and to repeat them accurately.
One time he told a student that he had “hissed the mystery lectures” when he meant to say “missed the history lectures.”
He told another student that the young man had “tasted a worm.”
He meant to say that the student had “wasted a term.”
Today, this particular type of pronunciation error is often called a “Spoonerism.”
Archibald Spooner
한번은 그가 어떤 학생에게 ‘missed the history lectures'(역사 강의를 빼 먹었다)를 말하려고 하면서, ‘hissed the mystery lectures'라고 말한 적이 있었다.

Most people have great difficulties making their own decisions when they are not sure what to do.
They often let close friends and relatives influence them through opinions.
They even allow gossiping neighbors to express their thoughts for them.
If you are influenced by the opinions of others whenever you reach decisions, you will not succeed in anything you do.
Remember you have a brain and mind of your own.
You should use it and reach your own decisions.

Although restrictions against opening adoption files make the search much harder,
they do not necessarily discourage those adoptees who want to discover who their biological parents are.
Those men and women who are desperate to find what they want to know will, if they can afford it, hire a detective to find out.
If not, some of them are willing to devote all their time and energy to finding more about their origins.

When we hear about wetlands such as swamps and bogs, we are often reminded of unpleasant experiences:
we get swamped with homework and bogged down in math problems.
This makes it hard to realize the importance of wetlands.
Wetlands are important to many kinds of animals and plants that live there.
Some birds nest in wetlands and others use them for rest stops during flights.
Wetlands are important to people, too.
People visit wetlands to fish, take pictures and just listen to the sounds and enjoy being outdoors.
Wetlands also help us in other ways.
They control flooding by soaking up water like a sponge and then letting it out later on.

It is difficult to say just how urbanized the world has become.
With urban growth taking place rapidly, it is impossible even for experts to do more than provide estimates.
According to the UN data, almost half of the world’s population is now urban.
These data make the very different definitions of urban used by different countries.
Some countries count any settlement of 1,000 people or more as urban,
while others use 10,000 as the minimum for an urban settlement; and Japan uses 50,000 as the cut-off.
This, by the way, tells us that urbanization is a relative phenomenon.
In countries like Peru, a settlement of 2,000 represents a significant center.
However, a much larger concentration of people is required to count as “urban.”

She told me that I was suffering from a bad attitude.
And even after she told me, it took me a while to see she was right.
It is easy to see another person's bad attitude but difficult to admit our own.
I should have realized that it was my negative attitude that really annoyed me, not the doubled commutes.
I wasn't sleeping well at night; I felt nervous.
One's body is, after all, prone to weakness or failure when one is subjected to continued stress.
And the early signs of such problems were already beginning to show.

She was born in England in 1821, and emigrated to New York City.
One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor.
That was almost impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century.
After writing many letters seeking admission to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a medical school in Philadelphia.
After graduating from the medical school in 1849, she wanted to become a surgeon.
Unfortunately a serious eye infection forced her to abandon the idea.
She found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman.
In 1857 she and her sister, also a doctor, along with another female doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women and children.
Besides being the first female doctor and founding her own hospital, she also established the first medical school for women.

In spite of the sensitive nature of the issue and various foreseeable problems,
it is still obvious that the nation needs to start debating on euthanasia.
The issue has seldom been discussed openly, but according to a recent opinion poll,
over 70 percent of the respondents approved of doctor-assisted suicide when it is considered necessary.
The Korean tradition of strong filial duties may be one factor that would make the debate more difficult.
The debate may also prove to be still more controversial when it involves those who are poor, elderly and incompetent.
Yet, it is also true that everyone has the right to a more peaceful and dignified death.
What is needed is an efficient system to prevent abuse.

If you think clowning is just putting up makeup and acting like an idiot, you are wrong.
Anybody can be an idiot, but it takes many hours of practice to make your idiocy funny.
Aha! There's the trick.
I have had thirteen years of being a funny idiot, so it came to me naturally.
But making jokes is really hard.
I have to write down ideas when they pop into my head, or else I don't remember them.
Another trick of being a clown is not to scare kids.
It is tough.
Now whenever I go to see kids, I take off the dark stuff and just wear my bright undershirt,
making kids relaxed and willing to enjoy my show.

And even if we understand it, to accept it and to live in harmony with it are even less common and more difficult.
Consequently, we sometimes look for a shortcut, expecting to be able to skip some of these vital steps in order to save time and effort and still reap the desired result.

It is distressing to learn that the U.S. Supreme Court intends to make (safe) abortions for women more difficult than they already are.
Without a doubt, the poor and uneducated women who suffer already will suffer more.
The best way to cut down on the number of abortions is not to treat doctors and women as criminals.
Society should provide safe and inexpensive medical treatment in good clinics and proper counseling on birth control for abortion-seeking clients, plus easy availability of contraceptives.
Last but not least, information programs on sexuality and contraceptives should be made available in school and at home for teenage boys and girls.

I'm writing concerning your letter of April 30, 1996, where you said that you loved a man dearly but were having a hard time tolerating his freeloading.

Why are men so violent? Uncivilized behavior is easy to explain, but it's difficult to change.
It has more to do with how people react to fear and feelings of inadequacy than gender.
Violent behavior is a result of feeling powerless and impotent.
This applies to men and women of all ethnic groups, races and nations.

Scientists also know that the cold virus is very small (an electron microscope is needed to see it), very durable, and very difficult to identify.
In fact, there are probably over one hundred different types of cold viruses.
Scientists cannot identify one virus as more responsible for causing colds than other viruses.
Therefore, it is difficult for them to develop a vaccine to prevent colds.
If you are vaccinated against virus A, you are protected from virus A, but not from viruses X, Y, and Z.

Making socialism out of capitalism is easy.
It's like breaking eggs and making an omelet.
You nationalize everything and say it's ours.
To make capitalism out of that kind of socialism is much more complicated.
It's as hard as making eggs out of an omelet.

To survey national opinion in the United States, the sample must include a certain percentage of whites, blacks, Mexican Americans, and other minorities.
The sample must also include people with high, middle, and low incomes.
Last but not least, the sample must include people from the city and the country as well as people from all parts of the country.
Choosing a good sample is extremely difficult, but it is necessary to have a good sample for correct survey results.

These wastes include heavy metals (such as mercury) and other by-products of technology.
Such chemicals cause cancer, brain damage, and high infant mortality rates.
Dumping of the wastes is difficult to supervise.
And, in fact, even careful dumping has resulted in the destruction of whole areas.

I'm a nurse.
In fact, I have a lot of difficulty just making ends meet.
But I like being a nurse.
I guess it's because I enjoy helping people.
Being a nurse is hard work.
It means that a nurse works long hours.
And sometimes it isn't very pleasant.
There are all sorts of things I don't enjoy.
For example, I don't enjoy seeing people in pain.
It's true that my job is hard, but I'm used to working long hours and I don't mind the psychological pressure that my job puts on me.
Being a nurse isn't much fun, but at least I know I'm doing something worthwhile.

Sometimes it is very difficult to say no to people, but when I say yes to too many projects, then can't get them done, I am not only being unfair to myself; I am also being unfair to the person to whom I made the promise.
We need to learn how and when to say no, particularly in our personal lives.

The psychologist explained that it was a verbal test and that some of the questions were easy, while others were difficult.
The first question, for example, was "What two days in the week begin with T?"
"That's easy," the man replied.
"Today and Tomorrow."
Today와 Tomorrow이잖아."
The psychologist paused, studied his papers, and moved to the next question.
"This one is much more difficult. How many seconds are there in a year?"
Without blinking an eye, the man said, "Twelve."
"What did you say?" asked the psychologist.
"Twelve," said the elderly man, smiling.
"The second of January, the second of February..."

Quickie fad diets actually make it more difficult for people to keep
trim. But you can develop eating habits that reduce excess weight
safely-and permanently.
* quickie[slang]: done, completed, attained, etc. in less time than is usual or desirable.
fad: passing fashion 일시적인 유행
trim: fit; healthy
keep trim=to stay fit

Certainly it will be extraordinarily difficult and, at times, exceedingly
painful to cope with the problems of inflation, dwindling natural resources,
national defense, environment, disadvantaged minorities; the problems of
rebuilding vital foreign alliances and of charting peaceful relations with
nations that still proclaim their determination to destroy Western democracy.

No great achievement is possible without persistent work, so absorbing
and so difficult that little energy is left over for the more
strenuous kinds of amusement.

Even with the impressive advance in language-teaching methodology made in the last
three decades, it is not difficult to find lessons that violate the principle of
"sentence connectedness."

Accurate statistics are hard to come by because many suicides go unreported,
but different experts estimate that from 36 to 77 of every 100,000 physicians
die their own hand every year, at least three times the rate for the population at large.

The bill had a rough passage through the House of Lords.

At a scientific symposium in Arlington, Va., Laragh and his colleagues noted
that a low-salt diet is hard to follow, and may actually be harmful.

Investigators who have studied very young children in school overwhelmingly present
a grim picture. The child too often stumbles insecurely through kindergarten and the
early grades. His friends who were delayed a year or so quickly catch up and pass him -
usually become most stable and highly motivated. His learning retention frequently
remains lower than that if his later-starting peers, regardless of how bright he is. In
other words, it is hard to escape the conclusion that early schooling is little short
of crippling.
