[比較] bear, stand, endure, persevere, tolerate

[比較] stern, severe, austere
a stern guardian/ be made of stern stuff(불굴의 의지를 가진, 확고부동한 성격을 가진)

The breaking waves dashed high on a stern and rockbound coast.
a severe critic/ His parents are severe.
또한 딱딱한, 경박한, 간소한 것을 즐기는 것을 (severe in dress: 옷차림이 검소한, She has a severe haircut like a boy's.: 그 여자의 머리 깎은 스타일은 사내 아니 처럼 수수하다), 때로는 가혹함 또는 잔인함까지도 암시하며 (a severe penalty), 확대된 용법에서 사람에게 책임이 없는 사물에 쓰이는 경우에는 고통을 주는 것, 심한 불편을 주는 것을 (a severe winter, a severe headache)암시한다.
austere는 austeros(=dry)에서 왔다.
My common conversation I do acknowledge austere, my behavior full of rigor.
Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty-a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture.
[比較] take, seize, grasp, clutch, snatch, grab
take the lamp from the table
take a city
take the opportunity/ take the temperature of a room by observing the thermometer/ take a bath/ take a rest
He seized the gun from the robber./ The hungry children seized the food that was offered them.
seize an opportunity/ seize the attention of the crowd
seize the throne
The character of Louis ⅩⅢ is difficult to seize, for it comprised qualities hardly ever combined in one man.(루이 13세의 성격을 파악하기 어려운 것은, 일찍이 어떤 개인에게도 결합된 적이 없었던 여러 자질들을 포함하고 있었기 때문이다.
Pneumonia seized him in his thirty-fifth year.
The hawk grasped the fowl with its talons.(매는 발톱으로 새를 꽉 잡았다.)
grasp an idea
The child clutched his mother's hand./ She clutched his hand in terror./ I clutched desperately at the twigs as I fell.
snatch a purse/ snatch a kiss
snatch a child from the flames/ He snatched the book from her hand.
grab all the food from the table/ grab power/ The child grabbed all the candy.
[比較] translation, version, paraphrase
the Authorized(or King James) Version(흠정성서)
A translation must be a paraphrase to be readable.(번역은 술술 읽을 수 있게 옮겨 놓은 것이어야 한다.)
a paraphrase of a poem
You are talking over my head.
* 미국인들이 쓰는 회화에서 You've lost me.
그러니까 I don't understand. 또는
I don't know what you are talking about. 또는
I don't get(or dig) it. 또는 I don't follow you.
You are talking over my head.
I don't follow you very well. 또는
Would you mind using simpler words?
This movie is over my head.
It's beyond me도 I don't understand.
I can't do it.
You are an angel.
들어 준 사람에게 미국인들은 흔히 You are an angel이라고 한다.
You are a diamond in the rough.
How tall are you?
* What's your weight?
That's a tall order.
That's a tall tale.
He is a handful.
누가 마음에 쏙 드는 말을 했을 때 You said a mouthful.
You can say that again과 같은
ex) She is an eyeful, isn't she?
He got an earful from his teacher.
Sorry, you missed the boat
* You missed the boat 또는 you missed the bus라 하면 우리나라
He then leaves on business, commending to her his friend Pierre Bezuhov,
and urging her to rely on him in any difficulty.

^^The fact is that the leaders of Hanchongnyon and the inter-Korean
Pomchonghangnyon youth-student confederation are regarded here as a
pro-Pyongyang group with their support for the North Korean proposal
that unification of the two Koreas should be brought about through a
confederation. The leftist students at the same time refuse to recognize
the miserable plight of the North Korean people under the hereditary
tyranny of Kim Il-sung and his son, Chong-il. Incidentally, the two
delegates from Hanchongnyon illegally sent to the North via Europe
reportedly bowed in tribute at the tomb of Kim Il-sung, laying a
bouquet there. Ironically, pro-North Korean radical student leaders
here have rarely expressed respect for any of South Korea's presidents.

The key to the successful four-way conference is the resumption of
inter-Korean dialogue. Pyongyang, however, has been seeking a way out
of its plight through negotiations with Washington and Japan alone, to
the exclusion of Seoul. But the United States and Japan will not give
massive assistance to the North if it flies in the face of economic
logic.

This year the numbers are expected to show a steeper decline.
Benjamin Franklin once worked as a printer.
From his work, he realized how difficult it was to make books.
However, he really enjoyed reading and wanted to get as many books as he could.
Franklin came up with a good idea - to set up a club where people could share their books.
At last, fifty members joined the club in 1732.
The club members were allowed to take the books home with them.
This club, called Franklin's Club, is said to be America's first circulating library.
Benjamin Franklin
The life of Dorothy and Patrick Tien has improved greatly since they both got new jobs.
Dorothy got a position as an editor at a publishing company.
Patrick was hired as a full-time consultant for a construction firm.
The difference between their new jobs and their old ones can be summed up in one word: flextime.
Until they secured these new positions, Dorothy and Patrick had a very difficult time raising their two small children.
Their life was very stressful because they were at the mercy of a nine-to-five schedule and had to pay a lot for day care.
To get to work on time, they had to have the children at the day care center by 7:30 every morning.
Everybody wants to be in Professor Frazier's class.
Many of the students sign up for his classes because of his widespread reputation.
He treats all students fairly, and they can always count on his help and encouragement.
Small group discussions take place in his class.
He recommends that every student in his class talk to one another in groups.
All the discussions have a definite relationship to students' interests.
Even the issues that cause argument - race, politics, morality - are brought
because he considers it useful to meet difficult topics openly and honestly.
Because of Henry's unshakable mental attitude, he was able to appear on a TV show and said as follows:
Before I was handicapped, there were 10,000 things that I could do.
Now I can only do 9,000 things.
I can make a choice.
I can choose to cry about the 1,000 or focus on the 9,000.
I had some troubles in my life.
I didn't make any excuses due to my handicap.
I was able to learn from the difficult situations I faced.
Why don't you step back, take a wide view and have a chance to say, ‘Maybe that isn't such a big deal at all.'?
Some history researchers suggest Marco Polo never actually visited China.
Why do they say that?
First, they ask why he didn't write about the Great Wall.
It's hard to miss!
Then, they point out he also failed to mention Chinese tea-drinking ceremonies, a very important part of life there.
Moreover, no Chinese sources of the period mention Marco Polo, although they mention other foreigners.
Finally, some say he never traveled much farther than Turkey.
Travelers who tried to follow his route always became lost at this point.
Perhaps he copied details from guidebooks on China.
The arctic tern is an extraordinary bird that makes difficult journeys.
It flies up to 35,000 kilometers every year―all around the world from the North Pole to the South Pole and back again!
That's more than any other animal.
Arctic terns fly through all types of weather, using the sun and stars to help them.
They spend almost all of their life in the air.
When they need food, they catch fish from the sea.
Some arctic terns live thirty years or more―so they travel over one million kilometers in their lifetime.
The bird is only thirty-eight centimeters long and weighs around 300 grams.
Nearly all runaways come from homes in which there are clear problems.
In any case, it is important for parents to be aware of the possibility that their child may run away,
and to be aware of the warning signs that often precede it.
One is a sudden change in behavior.
This change may be one of eating or sleeping habits.
Changes in social habits can also indicate problems, particularly when a teenager becomes withdrawn from friends and outside contacts.
If a young person begins to show sudden mood swings, going from very happy to very sad, for example,
there is a good chance that he or she is undergoing some sort of stress that is difficult to resolve.
When it comes to teaching moral behavior, it's not what you say but what you do that counts the most.
The negative side of this is illustrated by the words “The footsteps a child follows are most likely the ones his parents thought they had covered up.” Positive role-modeling, on the other hand, can bring big rewards.
Every year, Amy's parents gave holiday dinners to unfortunate families.
At age ten, Amy organized a fund-raiser for giving free meals to poor children.
In an age when so many kids are thinking only of themselves, how did Amy give a helping hand?
“I watched my parents,” she says simply.
On the way home, the boy and his teacher reviewed every move in each and every match.
Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.
“Sir, how did I win the tournament with only one move?” “You won for one reason,” the teacher answered.
“You've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo.
And the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”
If Madeline Powell had her way, she'd eat like vegetarian.
Many nights, dinner would be a simple salad or rib-sticking bowl of porridge.
But Madeline, 39, has her family to consider.
“My son is picky with vegetables,” she says regrettably.
“And my husband, Jim, is a meat-and-potatoes guy.”
Guess what's happened since they married 21 years ago?
Between them, Madeline and Jim have gained nearly 50 kilos.
Putting on weight after marriage is a common reality, many studies shows.
But relax.
It's possible to modify even deep-rooted patterns.
Here are strategies for handling some of life's difficult dining experiences.
Traveling around the country I find that more and more people have an urge to pry into such difficult subjects as science, philosophy, religion and political theory.
More often than not, however, this urge soon dries up.
People find that the book which they open with high hopes of enlightenment turns out to be beyond their grasp.
Actually, any book intended for the general reader can be understood if you approach it in the right way.
What is the right approach?
The answer lies in one important rule of reading.
You should read a book through superficially before you try to master it.

If people could see themselves yelling, they would be shocked at how uncivilized they appear to those who are trying to help them.

What will life be like without our friends?
Some have many friends, some have few, but it is difficult to find a person with no friends at all.
Much of our life, both in our younger days and when we are grown up, is spent with others, so that to have no friends is unthinkable.
Though we cannot all be friends, those who are not our friends are not always enemies.
We have a feeling of friendship towards some which we cannot have towards others.
That is nature and it cannot be changed.

One of the most difficult lessons to learn in painting is when to stop. In
overworking, not only will your painting lose its spontaneity and freshness, but you
may very well find that you lose the painting altogether.
But if Reagan has grown bigger than supply-side economics, if he has grasped

than preaching, he is more likely to succeed in the challenges ahead.

A new executive went to his first high-level meeting. At the end of the
conference table sat a fellow who, whenever a tough problem came up,
would say something like, "Well, it never rains, but it pours." or
"It's a long road that has no turning." or "If life gives you lemons,

"Exactly what does that guy do?" the new exec asked a colleague after
the meeting.
"He gives us our spirit of unity." was the reply. "We'd all like to

As you know, your domestic market conditions are now too fluid to
foresee the future direction of your economy. This is especially so
given the increasingly protectionist orientation of your government's
decision makers. This situation makes it difficult to undertake any new
constructive action to strengthen our position in your market. Prudence

What are some difficulties of friendship? According to Mr. Sifford, the
greatest is that we tend to expect too much too soon. Deep relationships
take time. Another is that each wants to own the other. One is likely to
claim an almost total right to his friend's time and attention. However,
friendship requires action from each person. Unless you spend a
reasonable amount of time together, talking on the phone, writing
letters, and being together, friendship will go away. In brief, you must
give as much as you take.
>>> The Boxer <<< Sung By Simon & Garfunkel
< Artist
Popular
Sound of Silence,
Scarborough Fair, Mrs.Robinson, The Boxer, Bridge Over
Troubled Water
Central Park

New

I am just a poor boy
Though my story is seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocketful of mumbles,
Such are promises, all lies, and jest
Still, a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest Mm mm....
-
-
When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers,
In the quiet of a railway station
Running scared, laying low,
Seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know
Lie-la-lie
-
-
Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a "come on" from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there Ooo-la-la
-
-
Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone, going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me
Leading me, going home
In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving
But the fighter still remains
-
YOU CALL IT LOVE
sung by Karoline Kruger
-
You call it love
They're things I need to say
About the way I feel
When your arms are all around me
You call it love
Words I'd heard that sound so fine
Meaningless each time
Till you came and found me
See the ground is slowly turning dizzily, easily
Feel the way my heart is burning secretly inside of me
-
You call it love
All the wishes in my mind
soared into the skies
Were reflected in my own eyes
You say it's love
variations on a theme
Love was just a dream
Memories of past sighs
See you love is always round me
Everywhere in the air
New sensations now surround me
Ocean wide deep inside
-
You call it love
All my days past close to you
Grey skys turn to blue
And the sun shines all around me
You call it love
It's a phrase that people say
Each and every day
Real love is hard to find though
See the ground is slowly turning dizily easily
Feel the way my heart is burning from your touch secretly
-
You call it love
New I know it's much more
Being close to y
「She's A Lady」 ― Richard Sanderson
Somedays she's an eagle flying high
Reaching for heights unforeseen
Trying to cope with the body of a woman
and the mind of a child she'd left behind

The child she'd always been
She's a lady lady lady lady lady

The most difficult thing is to cope with myself, I guess.
< Someone to love > Suan Maguire
Baby it's only natural to fill the way we do
We're only humen
I know you wonder
If loving's worth the pain we go through
Your emotions are growing stronger

Thanks to better medical care and living environments, the number of old people is constantly increasing.
Therefore, care of the elderly people is a difficult problem for our society to solve.
Who will take care of them in the future: the nursing home or the family?
What will be a good method in the care of the elderly?
What makes an act excellent (virtuous)?
Aristotle admitted that this is a difficult question, which cannot be answered by any exact rule.
Excellence is more than a matter of knowledge or science; it is an art that each individual must develop through practice.
He advised that, in general, excellence in a particular faculty lies somewhere between extremes.
In battle, a warrior should exhibit neither a deficiency of nerve (cowardice) nor an excess (foolhardiness).
Rather, he should strike a happy medium (courage).
A work of sculpture or architecture should be judged by asking whether it might be improved, either by taking something away or by adding something to it.
If it cannot, the work is "just right"―excellent.
ions for its long-term capacity to maintain both its citizens' consumption demands and its international position.
Already this is happening in the case of USSR, the US, and Britain.
We therefore return to the conundrum which has exercised strategists and economists and political leaders from classical times onward.
As historian Harry Jaffa puts it, Lincoln stressed that democracy must not be based just on "mere opinion" but on a "moral purpose."
In unprecedented circumstances, through events of the greatest horror, with few faithful allies, Lincoln never lose sight of his principles.
He also showed astonishing political skills-maneuvering to avoid firing the first shot, holding the Border States in the Union and then freeing the slaves.
It is a shame to see Hangeul used without discretion in the media, on the Internet and in our ordinary lives.
The principal offender together with the mass media is the government.
Some examples include the legal community's use of vocabulary thinking that by using Japanese legal terms the words would possess authority,
the National Assembly's rigid use of difficult Chinese characters instead of using easy vocabulary and the National Police Agency,
Seoul Metropolitan Government Office and the Subway Corporations' hanging up of signs that do not even meet primary school level.
Korea has been lauded as a successful model in coping with the financial crisis, but to people in countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan, it has exported the image of a "horrible country."
A Japanese writer said, "Koreans who had suffered have now become a people who oppress others."
Her book continues, "Korea is a country where foreigners find it difficult to live.
There are no residence rights and it is the only country in the world where a Chinatown failed.
Koreans are well aware of issues concerning green cards in the US and fingerprinting in Japan,
but completely ignorant about what foreigners go through in Korea."
No, I know, but it's just so hard, you know? I mean,
you're sitting there with her, she has no idea what's happening, and then you finally get up the courage to do it,
and there's the horrible awkward moment when you've handed her the note.
Now, I realize it is a difficult task,
but we have the opportunity to make history here.
And I want all of us to make it together.
So good luck. We're counting on you.
The base will close.
The only question is, will you make it
a swift death or a painful one?
No way. I won't sit on my hands.
I sympathize that this is gonna be difficult for you.
And I don't know how yet,
but I will make it up to you, Peter.
I'm a powerful friend to have right now,
perhaps your only friend,
so don't defy me.
If you weren't unsure now, there'd be something wrong with you.
I expected this.
Not easy, what we're asking you to do.
It's okay to vacillate a little.
I'm not trying to throw a wrench in the works.
I know you're not. I'll tell you what.
You take the rest of the day off. You go back to your office,
you catch up with whatever you have to catch up on,
you get a good night's sleep, you go to a meeting tomorrow,
and then you come here and we'll talk the whole thing through.
Can you give me at least that?
