차도에 중앙선을 보면은 노란색 줄이 그어져 있는데 특히
한적한 국도에 보면은 졸리운 경우 사고를 방지하고자 돌출
물이 설치되어 있는데 이름을 살펴보니까 "cat's-eye"라고
되어있었습니다. 왜 그런지요?
cat's-eye : '고양이의 눈'이죠. 도로의 중간에 설치되어 있
어서 야간운행시에 운전자가 길을 잘볼수 있도록
한 야간반사장치를 말합니다. 이것은 일종의 반
사경(reflector)으로서 야간주행 또는 기상상태
가 안좋은 날 도로에서 headlight를 켜고 다닐
때 불빛을 받으면 빛을 발하도록 반사기를 넣은
도로용 대갈못이라고 할 수 있겠지요. 이것을
'cat's-eye'라고 부르는 이유는-고양이의 눈은
밝은 곳에서는 동공이 작아지고, 반대로 어두운
곳에서는 빛을 발하며 커지게 되죠-어두운 도로
에서 빛을 받으면 빛나는 야간반사장치의 모습이
마치 컴컴한 밤에 광채를 발하는 고양이의 눈과
흡사하다고해서 붙여진 이름이라고 합니다.

"Don't whistle until you are out of the woods." 를 직역하면 "숲
을 벗어나기까지 휘파람을 불지 마라" 란 말이 됩니다.
여기서 '숲'이 무엇을 상징하느냐는 것을 이해하면 쉽게 이해가 됩니
다.
'숲'은 바로 '위험 지역'을 뜻합니다.
오늘날이야 고속도로가 이리저리 뚫려서 동서 어디를 다녀도 어려울
것이 없지만 미국의 개척 당시 사람들이 서부로 향해 갈 때 숲이란 위
험 바로 그 자체였습니다.
인디언이 있고 맹수가 있으며 길을 알 수 없는 어두운 숲(dark woods)
은 개척자들이 마음을 놀 수 없는 곳이었지요.
그러다가 숲을 빠져나와 탁 트인 '대평원(the great plains)'을 눈 앞
에 바라보는 그들이, "We are now out of woods(이제 숲을 벗어났다)."
라고 안도의 숨을 쉬었을 때의 그 심정이 이해가 갑니다.
여기에서 'woods'가 '위험 지역'을 상징하게 되었고 "Don't whistle
until you are out of woods." 가 "위험에서 벗어나기까지 마음을 놓
지 마라" 란 뜻이 되는 것입니다.
휘파람은 기분이 좋을 때 부는 것이니까 'don't whistle,' 즉 '휘파람
을 불지 마라'는 말은 '마음을 놓지 마라' 가 되는 것이지요.
같은 발상으로 'in woods'는 '위험에 처하다'란 말이 됩니다.
"We're still in woods." 는 '우리는 아직도 위험 속에 있다." 란 말
이지요.

An old man got on a train with a gorgeous hat his son bought for him.

“몇 주 전에 H. S. 백화점에서 똑같은 모자를 사서
그 모자 안쪽에 명함을 넣어두었는데 어느 날 그 모자를 잃어 버렸어요.
이 모자 안에 내 명함이 있는 걸 보니 내 모자임에 틀림없군요.
자, 이제 모자를 제게 돌려주시죠.”

At last the old man handed the hat to the young man and said,
“In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and dropped this hat unconsciously.
You are insisting that this hat is yours.
Thank God, you can take your lost hat and I can take my stolen cow back.”
At this the young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a moment? Nature calls me.”
The young man stood up and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He never returned!
노인은 어떻게 해야 하나 잠시 생각했다.
마침내 노인은 모자를 젊은이에게 건네주면서 말했다.

“죄송하지만 화장실에 좀 가야겠어요.”

What in the world are you doing this late in the evening.
The smiling landscape of last summer is gone. There is neither the smell
of the warm grass nor the scent of flowers and pines. The sun is setting.
The flat land now rolls away to the horizon with the sky pressing down
like a dark blanket. I scan the village, and there is no sign of
movement. The whole village looks deserted. I find myself alone in the
midst of isolation, Only occasional gusts of wind stir broken boughs and
dust, threatening to blow away everything.
