[比較] after, behind
The faculty marched in pairs, one after another.
One stays after the others는 after the others who have left를, One calls after a person은 after a person who is walking ahead를, One looks after the children of a friend는 after the children of a friend who is away, ill, or engaged(집을 비웠거나 병을 앓는, 혹은 볼일이 있는 친구의 아이들의 뒤를)를 암시한다.
Who ruled after James Ⅰ?/ After one o'clock no one may leave the room.

[比較] till, until
A son's a son till he takes a wife처럼 할 수도 있다.
Until he went to college, he never had thought of his speech./ He had never thought of his speech till(or until) he went to college.
Wait till the rain has stopped라고도 할 수 있다. He waited till the rain stopped 또는 He waited till the rain had stopped라고 할 수 있다. till(또는 until)은 He did not learn of it till the next day(다음 에 가서야 그 일을 알았다)에서처럼 부정적 구문에 쓰이기도 한다. 이 구문에서 계속되는 것은 부정의 상태 즉, he did not learn이다. It was not long till we realized(오래지 않아 우리는 깨달았다) 같은 글은 이렇게 설명할 수 없다. 여기서 주절 it was not long은 계속하는 것으로 생각되는 문장을 만들지 못한다. She can't go till she finishes her work와 Until injustice is ended, peace will never be realized 같은 글에서는 till, until의 용법은 표준적이지만 다음과 같은 구문에서 till, until의 사용은 가끔 나타나는 수는 있어도 격식 차리는 글에서는 before, when을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
It was not long before he noticed the change.(이윽고 그 변화가 그의 눈에 띄었다.)/ She had scarcely arrived when it began to storm.

Conservatism:
(진보주의)에 대립되는 개념. historical conservatism(역사적 보수주의)과
psychological conservatism(심리적 보수주의) 등으로 나눌 수 있다.
구질서를 지키고자 했던 영국의 progressivism(점진주의), 독일 낭만파의

In 1926, there was a double tragedy in her life because her much-loved mother died.
Agatha Christie suffered a nervous breakdown, and one night she abandoned her car and mysteriously disappeared.
She went missing for 11 days and was found in a hotel in the north of England.
It is interesting to note that it was while she was suffering so much that she wrote one of her masterpieces, The Murder of Roger Ackroyal.

Daniel Defoe wrote a famous story, The Adventure of Robinson Crusoe.
It was about a man who lived on a desert island.
Actually, there was a real-life Robinson Crusoe, who was a sailor.
One day the sailor had a fight with his captain.
He left the ship and stayed on an island off the coast of Chile.
Defoe heard about what the sailor had done to survive in the desert island.
Defoe used the sailor's adventures as a model to write his story.

Linda was walking home from work one day last month, when she saw a man who was trying to break into a car.
She asked him what he was doing.
Then he said to her, "Get lost!"
She ran to a nearby shop and asked the owner to call the police, which he did immediately.
When she went outside again, she saw that both the thief and the car had gone.
About ten minutes later, a police car came.
Linda gave a description of the thief.
She said that he looked about twenty-five years old.
A few days later she found out that the thief had been caught and that the car had been returned to its owner, undamaged.
Linda was glad to be able to help.

One mid-July day I visited Inner Mongolia.
There were endless fields of wild flowers.
Of 1,000 species of wild flowers, 500 herbs are used to make Chinese medicines.
About 80% of all Chinese herbal medicines are from this area.
We stayed in a Mongolian tent.
The grassland around the tent was a sea of forget-me-nots, though different from the ones I know in Korea.
Their leaves and stems seem lean and weak, yet are as hard as wires.
This is to protect them from the long, dry, cold, and windy winter, and to help them to survive through to the spring.
The blue flower is like the 'dew of the stars.'

One night at the busy restaurant where I waited on tables, a customer paid his bill and told me to keep the change.
Minutes later, I discovered that not only was there no tip, but he had given me $4 less.
When I told this to my co-worker who was clearing the table, he just grinned.
"Not to worry," he said.
"He's coming back."
There, on my co-worker's fingertips, dangled the customer's forgotten car keys.

One day, I was cooking in the kitchen when the telephone rang.
I went to answer immediately.
She was my close friend, Lisa.
While we were talking on the phone, the fire alarm sounded.
I ran back to the kitchen.
The room was full of smoke and the beef was badly burnt.
I quickly turned off the gas, opened all the windows, and then went out of the house.
To my surprise, two fire engines were outside my house.
I was rather worried.
I told the firemen it was my careless cooking that caused tile heavy smoke.

One day, a poor man named Scott, came to visit Taylor.
He said, “Taylor, I need your help. I am a poor man, a man with no money.”
Taylor looked at him kindly and answered, “I'll help you. Tell me what's wrong.”
Scott said, “Yesterday I stopped in front of the door of a restaurant.
The restaurant belonged to a rich man.
I only smelled the food.
However, he wanted me to pay him for the food.
And he called the judge.
The judge said I must go to the court today.
Please Taylor, can you help me?”
In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott.
And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now.
Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.”
After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment.
Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.

Taylor

One day before people knew about coffee, a young goatherd noticed that his herd did not come home the previous night.
So he set out to look for them.
After searching around, this young goatherd finally found his herd.
Though he was relieved to find them, he was still concerned for their health,
for a normally calm and boring herd of goats was now dancing and jumping.
On further investigation he found that goats were consuming red berries growing on nearby plants.
Feeling rather tired, he tried the berries and found them to be quite bitter, yet strangely good.
Soon he did the same thing.

All the children at school love Mr. Rider.
He has worked at the school for a long time.
He cleans the floors and keeps everything neat.
He is very nice to the children, too.
He helps them with their schoolwork and often finds things they have lost in school.
One day the children thought, “Let's do something nice for Mr. Rider.” They bought him a beautiful tie and a pair of socks.
The next morning when he came to work, everyone shouted, “Surprise!”
Mr. Rider said it was the best surprise he ever had.

Driving fast last Monday, I was pulled over by a police officer.
The officer noticed that my shirt had the name of a local secondary school on it.
“I teach math,” I explained.
He smiled and said, “OK. Here's a problem. A teacher is speeding on the highway at 25 kilometers over the limit.
At $12 for every kilometer over the limit, plus $40 court costs, what is her total cost?”
I replied, “taking that total, subtracting the low salary I receive, multiplied by the number of kids that hate math,
then adding to that the fact that none of us would be anywhere without teachers, I'd say zero.”
He handed me back my license, “Actually, math was never my favourite subject. Please slow down.”

Like many fairy stories, the tale of Rapunzel has a deeper meaning to it.
It is a story about self-image.
Rapunzel is a young lady who lives locked up in a castle imprisoned by an old witch who continually tells her how ugly she is.
One day, a handsome prince passes by the tower and tells Rapunzel of her loveliness.
She lets down her golden locks so he may climb her hair to rescue her.
It is neither the castle nor the witch that has kept her a prisoner, but the belief in her own ugliness.
When she recognizes her beauty, she sees that she can be set free.
We all need to be aware of the witches inside ourselves that are stopping us from breaking free.

Yesterday Gary Roberts, age 60, entered a bank at 4:59 p.m., just one minute before the closing time.
Roberts told a bank employee, “I want to deposit five thousand dollars―all in pennies.”
He pointed to several heavy bags next to him.
The employee said it was too late to help him.
But Gary Roberts refused to leave the bank and the police were called.
This was not the first time he made trouble with the bank.
One day last year, he came into the bank ten times.
Each time he took out one dollar from his account.
Nobody knows why he does these things.

As I walked home one freezing day, I stumbled on a wallet someone had lost in the street.
I picked it up and looked inside to find some identification so I could call the owner.
But the wallet contained only three dollars and a crumpled letter that seemed to have been there for years.
The envelope was worn and the only thing that I could read was the return address.
I started to open the letter, hoping to find some clue.
Then I saw the dateline and found that the letter had been written almost ten years before.

Several years ago we bought a huge house, more than 200 years old.
In the house there was a room with a very old piano in it.
It was out of tune.
Most of the keys didn't even work.
One night, I was in the house alone.
Suddenly I heard piano music.
It was in perfect tune, coming from the piano room.
To get to the room, I had to go through several unlit rooms and hallways.
I couldn't bring myself to do it.
After a few minutes, the music stopped.
Then my dad came home.
We went to the room.
I tried to play the piano―it was totally out of tune as it had always been.

One day, Marsha went into the forest to pick some berries because she wanted to make a pie for her grandparents.
She soon got lost, so she stopped at a house to ask for help.
Unfortunately, a bear lived there.
He made Marsha stay to clean and cook.
Marsha wondered how she could escape.

An old man got on a train with a gorgeous hat his son bought for him.
A young man beside him saw the hat on his lap and said, “Look, how elegant it is! Where did you get it?”
The old man said, “My son bought it at H. S. department store for me.”
The young man stealthily slipped his calling card into the hat and yelled,
“A few weeks ago, I bought the same hat at H. S. department store
and stuck my calling card inside the hat, but the hat was stolen the other day.
Now I see the calling card in your hat, so it must be mine.
Now give it back to me.”
The old man thought for a while what he should do.
At last the old man handed the hat to the young man and said,
“In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and dropped this hat unconsciously.
You are insisting that this hat is yours.
Thank God, you can take your lost hat and I can take my stolen cow back.”
At this the young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a moment? Nature calls me.”
The young man stood up and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He never returned!

Once a poor student had to wander about the countryside.
He had no money, and he had no home.
One freezing night, the student knocked at the door of a farmer's house.
The farmer was an agreeable person who said, “Come in! You look very tired and hungry.”
The farmer gave the student supper, and the two began talking.

The student traveled on.
He eventually found a good job as a teacher and purchased a home of his own.
One day, he saw a very old fellow limping up the path.
His hair was white, and his clothes were ragged.
The teacher invited the old man in.
He was feeding the man, and they talked.
He recognized the stranger as the farmer who assisted him long ago.
The teacher said, “Now I know the answer to the question you asked me.
He was constructing a wheel that turns very slowly.
Someday the person at the top will be at the bottom.
And since we are all on the same wheel, my friend, you may live in my house in comfort all the days of your life.”

The first year of my college was terrible for me.
I didn't know how to handle myself.
I had a growing fear that I might flunk out.
The turnaround came one day during my second semester, on a day when my English professor was returning some essay papers to the class.
She held mine up, and I could see all the red marks and comments she had put on it.
I thought, “Oh, what is she going to do? Criticize my work in front of all these other students?”
Instead, she said, “Your grammar and spelling need a lot of work, Arthur, but this is an example of a very well-organized paper.”
Surely she had no idea what she had done for me.
She had blessed me with an affirmation.
She had shown me I could do something.

Jack arrived home from work one sunny afternoon.
He noticed a letter on the hall table.
He picked up the letter and opened it.
The letter began:
“Dear Jack, Congratulations! You have won an all-expenses-paid 5-day trip to Fiji!
Thank you for entering the competition at Franklin’s Supermarket at Downtown Shopping Center.”
He couldn't believe how lucky he was.
He went into the kitchen and found a bottle of champagne.
He sat back in the sofa and sipped on his glass of champagne.
Then he noticed the date of the trip―March 20th.
Jack screamed with horror.
“I can't believe it! I'm going to kill the mail carrier! They're always late!”
Today was March 21st.
Jack
Jack

She was born in England in 1821, and emigrated to New York City.
One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor.
That was almost impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century.
After writing many letters seeking admission to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a medical school in Philadelphia.
After graduating from the medical school in 1849, she wanted to become a surgeon.
Unfortunately a serious eye infection forced her to abandon the idea.
She found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman.
In 1857 she and her sister, also a doctor, along with another female doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women and children.
Besides being the first female doctor and founding her own hospital, she also established the first medical school for women.

In a lake there once lived a scary monster.
His face was black, his belly blue, and his hands and feet were red.
He had giant tusks.
Whenever any animal came to drink water, the monster suddenly jumped up from the lake, drew it down by force, and swallowed it.

Once a troop of monkeys came to the lake, led by their king.
The monkeys were all thirsty.
The monster was very pleased at the thought of catching them for food.
But the monkey king noted that the footprints of various animals led to the lake but none led away from it.
He was suspicious and worried.
He gave strict orders that no one was to drink water from the lake until he gave the word.
So the monkeys now waited by the waters of the lake, impatiently thirsty.
Their discipline was good, however, and the king's orders were completely followed.

A couple gave birth to five daughters in a row, and not a son.
They are sure to have a son because they bore only daughters five times.
Do you think they are right?

Let's suppose you get number 2 five times after you throw a dice five times.
If you throw a dice once more, the probability of getting number 2 will be lower than one sixth.
Do you believe this?

One fine day, when Ted was playing with his friends,
one of his friends climbed up a tree and fell down into an aquarium which was placed under the tree.
The aquarium was full of water.
At that moment, all the children were afraid and ran away except Ted.
He was also very scared but he thought that he had to do something.
Finally he picked up a big stone and threw it to break the aquarium glass.
Everybody admired him because he was calm and clever.

My love of kite began one day last March.
I was sketching a robin in my backyard when a loud noise startled me.
An eagle was swooping down from the sky.
As it fell, it screamed “Waaah!"
It lay still.
The eagle was made of painted paper!
Then I heard the sound again behind me: "Waaah!"
Turning, I saw Tommy, the seven-year-old who lives next door, crying.
"Is it broken?" he asked through tears.
"I don't know," I said.
"What happened?"
"It hit a tree and fell."
I lifted the toy and studied it.
The round wooden stick that supported the kite was broken.
Fixing and flying it for two hours, I was so excited that I couldn't believe the fun I had.

A century of volcanic inactivity of the mountain had made the village people think it nothing to worry about.
Unfortunately it exploded with the force of 10 million tons of TNT one morning.
The top of the mountain was blown away completely and a thick carpet of ash covered the landscape.
Trees were scattered about like tooth-picks.
There was no sign of life.
Most people believed that decades, even centuries, would pass before the land would recover.
However, nature proved to be far more resilient than expected.
The return of life was remarkable.
Today the bush carpets the ground and wildlife is abundant.
A forest of young trees graces the slopes and valleys below the volcano,
and a delicate beauty has returned once more to this vast wilderness area.

Earthquakes themselves are unpredictable.
Although any powerful submarine earthquake can bring a dangerous tsunami, not all such earthquakes actually result in a big wave.
Even though you have an effective detection system, it is useless if you cannot evacuate a threatened area.
Here, speed is of the essence.
Computer modeling can help show which areas are likely to be safest,
but common sense is often the best guide―run like the wind, away from the sea.
Evacuation warnings, too, should be easy to give as long as people are awake.
Radios are very effective to tell people to run.

Notice that even though there are humans, animals, and buildings in this scene, there seems to be no background.
Because there is no perspective, figures and forms seem to be crammed together.
We get the feeling the figures can't get away from the horrors of war―they are trapped in their suffering.
Guernica is painted in blacks, whites, and grays.
Why do you think Picasso did this particular painting without bright colors?
Even though it was painted to protest and to commemorate the bombing of Guernica, a small village in Spain,
Picasso's painting shows the kind of suffering that takes place in any war.

One night, I recalled the events of the day and how badly I had behaved toward my mother.
Quietly I slipped out of bed and picked up a pencil and paper from the dresser, then tiptoed into the kitchen.
I quickly wrote a short letter asking my mother to forgive me for being so naughty.
I didn't want my brothers and sisters to read my “sorry” note,
so I added a postscript: “Please don't let anyone else see this.”
Then I put the letter under my mother's pillow.

One morning a band of commuters were gathered at the railway station when the stationmaster's voice came over the loudspeaker.
The commuters braced themselves.
Would this be the usual announcement about a delay?
"Because of circumstances beyond our control," the stationmaster intoned, "the seven o'clock train is running on time today."

The global information market will be huge and will combine all the various ways human goods, services, and ideas are exchanged.
On a practical level, this will give you broader choices about most things, including how you earn and invest, what you buy and how much you pay for it, who your friends are and how you spend your time with them, and where and how securely you and your family live.
Your workplace and your idea of what it means to be "educated" will be transformed, perhaps almost beyond recognition.
Your sense of identity, of who you are and where you belong, may open up considerably.
In short, just about everything will be done differently.
I can hardly wait for this tomorrow, and I'm doing what I can to help make it happen.

One morning just as my physician and his nurse started into the examining room where I waited, the doctor was called to the phone in the hallway.
Since he had left the door open, I could not help but hear his voice grow angry and loud.
"Absolutely under no circumstances are you to do that! If you value your life, you won't do that!"
I was wondering what on earth some patient had proposed when the nurse grinned and whispered, "It's all right. That was one of his kids."

While in university, I dated my future husband, who was preparing for the ministry.
One Sunday morning I accompanied him to a nearby church where he was to preach.
Anxious to make a good impression, I sat in the front row by myself.
At the conclusion of the service, the song leader announced the final hymn.
I stood and joined the singing, but the song leader kept directing nervous glances toward me.
During the second verse, this intensified to an unmistakable stare.
Embarrassed, I began to check my dress for static-cling.
Finally, the man smiled with resignation and said to the congregation, "For the last verse, why don't we all stand?"

My husband's schedule changed, and we had to adjust to getting ready for work at the same time.
To adapt, he would grab his toiletries from the bathroom and dash to the kitchen sink to brush his teeth.
One morning he took off down the hall with his supplies.
I was running late and hollered after him, "Come back! I need a squeeze."
After he gave me a long, ardent embrace, I hated to tell him all I had wanted was some toothpaste!
* squeeze n.

Our dog hates baths, and even the mention of one sends him *scurrying off.
One day we heard him barking furiously at a bicyclist going by the house.
My husband ran out shouting, "Do you want a bath?"
"No, thank you!" replied the startled bicyclist, who quickly pedaled away.

One day Sally, an American student, went to a party in England.
Her English friends, Betty and Joan, were engaged in a serious conversation.
She was curious and walked over to them.
Approaching them, she overheard Betty say, "I lost quite a bit."
As Betty was quite overweight and had been trying to lose weight for some time, Sally wanted to know how much Betty had lost.
Breaking into the conversation, she asked, "May I ask how much you lost?"
Betty replied rather abruptly, "Fifty pounds or so.
I'm not sure exactly how much."
Sally was surprised.
Later, however, she learned that Betty had lost a lot of money at a fancy department store.

I found it in the middle of the sidewalk on my way home from school one spring morning.
It was a very tiny creature, whose feathers were wet in the rain.
And it was hardly breathing when I picked it up, I fed it raw meat and other treats for several weeks.
Soon, it became strong and started to hop around.
One day, someone left a window open.
When I came home from work, I discovered that it had flown away.

"We say that the universe is expanding."
"What makes it do that?"
"Most astronomers agree that the expanding universe can only have one explanation: Once upon a time, about 15 billion years ago, all substance in the universe was assembled in a relatively small area.
The substance was so dense that gravity made it terrifically hot.
Finally it got so hot and so tightly packed that it exploded.
We call this explosion the Big Bang."
"Just the thought of it makes me shudder."
"The Big Bang caused all the substance in the universe to be expelled in all directions, and as it gradually cooled, it formed stars and galaxies and moons and planets..."
"But I thought you said the universe was still expanding?"
"Yes I did, and it's expanding precisely because of this explosion billions of years ago.
The universe has no timeless geography.
The universe is a happening.
The universe is an explosion.
Galaxies continue to fly through the universe away from each other at colossal speeds."
"Will they go on doing that for ever?"
"That's one possibility.
But there is another.
You may recall that Alberto told Sophie about the two forces that cause the planets to remain in constant orbit round the sun?"
"Weren't they gravity and inertia?
"Right, and the same thing applies to the galaxies.
Because even though the universe continues to expand, the force of gravity is working the other way.
And one day, in a couple of billion years, gravity will perhaps cause the heavenly bodies to be packed together again as the force of the huge explosion begins to weaken.
Then we would get a reverse explosion, a so-called implosion.
But the distances are so great that it will happen like a movie that is run in slow motion.
You might compare it with what happens when you release the air from a balloon."
"Will all the galaxies be drawn together in a tight nucleus again?"
"Yes, you've got it.
But what will happen then?"
"There would be another Big Bang and the universe would start expanding again.
Because the same natural laws are in operation.
And so new stars and galaxies will form."

In more modern history, candidates have allied themselves with political parties.
Once a voter knows and favors the views of a certain political party, he may vote for anyone with that party's label.
Nevertheless, divisions of opinion develop, so that today there is a wide range of candidate views in any major party.

One day suddenly he fell gravely ill.

I shall never forget the disgust I felt one day in the United States when I
heard quoted for the first time the well known words of an American soldier, "My
country, right or wrong."

The teachers at our Sunday school took turns giving the lesson. Usually
they'd round it off with, "Now, children, the moral of this story is..."
One day, Miss Brown, the teacher whose turn it was, made the story
particularly exciting, and the youngsters were delighted. One boy asked if Miss
Brown might not give the lesson more often. "We like her very much," he
explained, "because she hasn't any morals."

Dean Rusk, former secretary of state and now professor of international
law at the University of Georgia in Athens, is constantly called upon to give
interviews, and is accordingly well prepared. One day last spring, arriving
early at the university's studio, where a television show was to be taped, he
took his place on the set and reviewed his notes while the crew completed
preparations. The floor manager announced that they would begin in five minutes.
Rusk produced a compact from his pocket, took out a powder puff and applied it
to his bald head, which would otherwise reflect the TV lights. He then put the
compact away and announced he was ready to begin.

Each day in our small town the siren at the fire station blows at 6 p.m. One evening
it sounded at 7:15 p.m. Concerned, a group of us townspeople gathered to see which way
the fire trucks would go.
When they didn't leave the station, we asked what was going on,"There isn't any fire,"
we were told. "the firemen are having a meeting and not enough of them showed up."

One evening, my sister-in-law's family decided that they would fly the American flag
every day instead of just on special days. The next morning they carried out
that decision.
Soon after the flag was placed in the bracket on the porch, there was a knock on the
front

to the flag, he asked, "Why is the flag flying today?"
After listening to the explanation, the mailman walked away saying, "Thanks. I just
wanted to make sure I wasn't working on my day off."
