군가와 어느 장소에서 만나는 약속이란 의미가 있기 때문에 이것을 사용

방학때라 그런지 거의가 학생이었다. 저만치 매표소옆에서 Jill이
시계를 들여다 보며 날 보면 죽여버리겠다는 듯이 입술을 깨물고
있는 것이 보였다. 한숨이 나왔다. 또 잔소리 꽤나 듣게 생겼다.
다음부턴 약속시간에 늦지 않겠다고 손이 발이 되게 빌었다.
거짓말이라면 벼락을 맞을 거라고 해도 믿질 않았다. 2회는 벌써
시작해서 들여보내주질 않았다. 영화도 못보고… 아 짜증난다.
다음 부턴 계획을 철저히 세워야지… 자자.
Most of those in line looked like students enjoying their
vacation. Further up the road, I could see Jill in front of
the ticket box looking at her watch impatiently and biting
her lips as if to swear she would kill me. I sighed. I
definitely knew what was about to come my way. Jill wouldn't
stop yelling and grumbling. I promised her not to be late
again and begged for mercy, like a dog. I said God would
strike me down if I was lying, but she wouldn't believe me.
The second showing of the movie had already started and we
were denied admission. I had a real hell of a day. Plan ahead
John. Good night.
1. Further up the road: 저만치 윗쪽에라는 말이지요. 쉽게
나오지 않는 표현일 겁니다. 이럴 때 확실히 잡아놓으세요.

2. Ticket box: 매표소를 말합니다. Box office도 같은 말이지만,
"영화 흥행"을 가리키는 말로도 쓰이지요.
3. Biting her lips as if to swear: 마치 무엇무엇하는 것처럼에
해당하는 표현이 나왔습니다.
He rolled up his sleeves as if to physically chastise them.
두들겨 패기라도 할 듯이 소매를 걷어부쳤다.
4. Come my way: 내 길로 오는 거니까, 내게 닥칠 것이라는 말입니다.
I knew a steak of bad lucks would come my way.
나한테 불행한 일들이 줄줄이 일어날 줄 알았다니까.
5. Grumbling: Grumble은 툴툴대는 걸 말합니다. 단어 자체가
정말 "툴툴대는" 것 처럼 들리는 것 같아요.
6. God would strike me down if I was lying: 미국인들도 우리와
생각이 통하는 부분이 많습니다. "거짓말이면 벼락맞는다"는 말입니다.
7. The second showing of the movie: 영화 회수를 말할 때
showing을 씁니다.
8. We were denied admission: 입장이 중단됐다는 말이지요. 접근
금지였다고 하면,
We were denied access.
9. Hell of a day: Hell of something은 이중의 뜻을 같습니다.
상황에 따라 "정말 거지같은"의 뜻이기도 하지만 어떨 때는 "정말
죽여주는"의 뜻이기도 합니다.
예를 들어,
I met a hell of a girl.
이럴 때는 상황으로 미루어 볼 때, 죽여주는 여자를 만났다는 말이겠지요.

의 단점을 떠올려 생각하게 된다. 그러다가 장본인이 늦게라도 나타나면 반
가움으로 자신의 상상을 지워버리게 된다. 그러나 전혀 나타나지 않게 되면
마음속에 새겨두게 되는 것이다. 'Better late than never'라는 표현이 있
다. 「전혀 안 나타나는 것보다 늦게 오는 게 낫다」라는 뜻을 가진 표현이
다.
A:I'm terribly sorry. I'm almost 5 minutes late.
B:Oh, that's OK. Better late than never.
A:You seemed to be counting something with your fingers.
B:How did you know that?
A:To be honest with you, I was counting your demerits while I was
waiting for you the other day.
B:Really? To be honest with you, I was counting your merits and I
almost ran out of them. So, I was just going to leave.
A:정말 미안해. 거의 5분이나 지각했군.
B:오,괜찮아. 안 나타나는 것보다는 늦게라도 오는 게 낫잖아.
A:손가락을 가지고 뭘 세고 있는 것 같던데.
B:어떻게 알았니?
A:솔직히 말해서 지난번에 내가 널 기다리고 있을 때 내가 너의 단점을 세
고 있었거든.
B:정말? 솔직히 말해서,나는 네 장점을 세고 있는 중이었는데,셀 것이 거
의 다 떨어져가고 있었어. 그래서 막 일어서려는 참이었지.
