The crocodile is a strange-looking creature. 악어는 이상하게 생긴 동물이다.

→ 큰 짐승을 잡아먹고 있는 악어를 보면 마치 눈물을 흘리는 것처럼 보이나 실은 입을 크게 벌리면 자동적으로 눈물이 나옴.
악어를 칭하는 단어
- alligator: 일명 ‘미국 악어’ 또는 ‘미시시피 악어’, 중국의 양자강 유역에서도 서식.

우선 이것들의 사전적 의미는
Aligator: 미국 동남부나 중국동부에 살고 있으며 주둥이가 넓고
짧은 것이 특징.
Crocodile:열대 물가에 살고 있으며 주둥이 끝이 뽀족한 것이 특징
이것은 악어의 지징이 친구처럼 서로 격신을 차몸 않고 서로를
칭할 때 사용되고 있습니다.
그래서 See you later, aligator. 등과 같이 쓰이는데
처음 만난 사람들일지라도 이렇게 사용함으로서 쉽게 친해질수 있다고
합니다.
'crocodile tears'가 '거짓눈물이라고 하는데 왜 그런
뜻이 되었는지요?
알려진 바에 의하면 악어는 큰 먹이를 삼킬 때 눈물을
흘린다구요.직역을 하면 악어의 눈물인데,사실 악어가
미안한 마음에 눈물을 흘리는 것도 아니고,맛있게 먹
으면서도 겉으로는 눈물을 흘리는 것처럼 보이기 때문
에 생겨난 말이랍니다.
