Probably the most famous film commenting on 20th century technology is
Modern Times, made in 1936. Charlie Chaplin was motivated to make the
film by a reporter who, while interviewing him, happened to describe
working conditions in industrial Detroit. Chaplin was told that healthy
young farm boys were lured to the city to work on automotive assembly
lines. Within 4 or 5 years, these young men's health was destroyed by
the stress of work in the factories. The film opens with a shot of a
mass of sheep making their way
down a crowded ramp. Abruptly the scene shifts to a scene of factory
workers jostling one another on their way to a factory. However, the
rather bitter note of criticism in the implied comparison is not
sustained. It is replaced by a gentler note of satire.
아마도 20세기 기술(문명)에 대해 비평한 가장 유명한 영화는 1936년에
만들어진 Modern Times일 것이다. Charlie Chaplin은 인터뷰하는 동안 우연히
산업이 발달한 Detroit에서의 노동 조건을 묘사한 기자에 의해 이 영화를
만들 동기를 부여받았다. Chaplin은 건강하고 젊은 농장의 젊은이들이 도시로
이끌려와서 자동 조립 라인에서 일하게 되는 이야기를 들었다. 4, 5년만에
공장에서의 스트레스로 인해 이 젊은이는 건강을 망쳤다. 이 영화는 많은
양들이 비탈길을 떼지어 내려가는 장면으로 시작된다. 갑자기 이 장면은
공장으로 가는 도중에 서로를 난폭하게 떠미는 공장 노동자들의 장면으로
바뀐다. 그러나 이렇게 암시된 비유 속에서 다소 씁쓸해 보이는 비평적인
논조는 오래 지속되지 않는다. 그것은 부드러운 풍자의 논조로 대치된다.
