amniotomy 양막절개, 분만유도를 위해 양수막을 인위적으로 절개하는 것. 양막절개는 광범위하게 행해지지만, 태아의 심장박동에 이상이 관찰되지 않는 한, 분만초기에는 시도되지 않는다.
양막절개를 시도하는 데는 보통 세 가지 이유가 있다. 첫째는, 태아의 상태측정을 위해 전기장치를 집어 넣기 위해서이고, 둘째는, 양수내에 태변이 있는지를 확인하기 위해서이다. (태변이 있는 경우, 태아는 불쾌감을 느낄 수 있다). 셋째는, 일단 양수가 터져야만, 태아의 머리가 자궁경부를 누르고, 산도(産道)의 확장을 촉진하기 때문이다.
