And they are hungry.

It's the newly born calves that they are after.

The herd breaks up and now it's easier to target an individual.

In the chaos a calf is separated from its mother.

The calf is young, but it can outrun the wolf if only it manages to keep its footing.

At this stage the odds are even -

either the caribou will make a mistake or after a mile the wolf will give up.
새끼가 실수를 하면 잡힐 것이고 1 마일만 달리면 늑대가 포기합니다
Further south, other bigger predators prowl the tundra.

Wolves.

For them, finding food on the plains is an even greater challenge.

Not only is their prey seasonal it's also hard to find.

They've been searching for days without a sign.

Somewhere in this immense landscape there is food for them.

It's so big and powerful, it can even bring down an adult caribou.

For it's size, it's said that the animal can eat more in one sitting than any other
이들은 몸집에 비해 식사량이 아주 많다고 합니다
which is why it's also known as the glutton.
그래서 대식가로 알려져 있죠
Being gluttonous here is a very effective strategy.
이곳에서는 폭식하는 습관이 아주 훌륭한 전략입니다
It's wise to eat all you can, when you can
먹을 것이 있을 때 모두 먹는 게 현명하니까요
and when even a glutton can't eat more
대식가조차 다먹지 못할 땐
it stores what's left for later, in the surrounding deep freeze.
