One 10-year-old boy decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a terrible car accident.

The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
Feeling a little bored, the boy said to his teacher, “Shouldn't I be learning more moves?”
The teacher replied, “This is the only move you'll ever have to know.” Not quite understanding, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament.
Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches.
The third match proved to be more difficult, but the boy used his one move to win the match.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced.
For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched but he went on with his match.
When his opponent made a critical mistake, the boy used his move to pin him.
The boy had won the match and the tournament.
He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and his teacher reviewed every move in each and every match.
Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.
“Sir, how did I win the tournament with only one move?” “You won for one reason,” the teacher answered.
“You've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo.
And the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

Last but not least, information programs on sexuality and contraceptives should be made available in school and at home for teenage boys and girls.

A while back, I read about a 5-year-old boy who lit a match and burned down the entire apartment building.
It was an accident, but nevertheless, it left 20 families homeless, and the businesses on the ground floor were forced to relocate.

Most boys have a natural inclination to admire their fathers, and a cultural gap between father and son is painful for both.
The middle-class father who at nights studies the encyclopedia in order to be able to answer his son's questions makes us smile a little, but we ought to admire him.
For such fathers this may be an introduction to lifelong education.
In an environment which values knowledge for its own sake he will not put down the encyclopedia with a sigh of relief when the son has grown up, but will want more of it.

In the dictionary of youth there is no such word as "fail." Remember the story
about the boy who wanted to march in the circus parade? When the show came to
town, the bandmaster needed a trombonist, so the boy signed up. He hadn't
marched a block before the fearful noises from his horn caused two old ladies to
faint and a horse to run away. The bandmaster demanded, "Why didn't you tell me
you couldn't play the trombone?" And the boy said, "How did I know? I never
tried before."
Many years ago, I might have done just what the boy did. Now I'm a grandfather
and have a lot of gray hair and what a lot of people would call common sense.
But if I'm no longer young in age, I hope I stay young enough in spirit never to
fear failure-young enough still to take a chance and march in the parade.
- Walt Disney

A new ad posted in our apartment house by a young boy announced that he would
wash a car for 50 cents. I promptly took advantage of his offer and, knowing that I was
his first customer, gave him an extra quarter for a job well done. Upon passing his sign
about ten minutes later, I was amused to see that it now read: "Car Wash 75 cents -
Experienced."

George Willard, the Ohio village boy, was fast growing into manhood, and new
thoughts had been coming into his mind. All that day, amid the jam of people at the
Fair, he had gone about feeling lonely. He was about to leave Winesburg to go away
to some city where he hoped to get work on a city newspaper and he felt grown up.
The mood that thad taken possession of him was a thing known to men and unknown
to boys.

For millions of people around the world, he was, quite simply, the living symbol of
Israel. With his distinctive black eye patch and round boyish face, he was instantly
recognizable in any country, in any kind of uniform, even in disguise, which he
donned from time to time in the service of his nation's diplomacy. Soldier, statesman
and swashbuckling hero of Israel's wars with its Arab neighbors, Moshe Dayan
occupied center stage in Israel for more than 30 years. By the time he died last week
of a heart attack at 66, Dayan had largely outgrown his image as a warrior and
become an impassioned advocate of peace.

Three boys were bragging about their fathers. One said, "My dad's so fast
he can shoot an arrow and get to the target before the arrow does."
"That's nothing," the second boy replied. "My dad's so fast he can shoot
a deer at 500 yards and get to the deer before it falls."
"Big deal!" the third said. "My dad works for the government and gets off
work at 4:30, but he's so fast he gets home by 3:45."

Many boys and girls who achieve brilliant results at school seem to go to
pieces when they reach a university and, on the other hand, some pupils
with undistinguished school records seem to develop wonderfully on reaching
the more agreeable environment of a university.
The difference between the two groups may be explained in part by differences
in the rate and timing of the candidate's intellectual growth.
Intellectual development, like physical growth, proceeds in a series of
jerks rather than at a uniform pace.

If he himself rose out of poverty, and filled a great position before he
died at the age of forty-three, this was not, I fancy, due to that
ambition to which most poor boys who afterwards achieve eminence owe
their success. He was, so far as I could judge, as free from ambition
in the ordinary sense of the word as any man who ever lived. If he rose
from position to position, it was not because he thrust himself on the
attention of his employers, but because his employers insisted on promoting
him. He was naturally a man of creative energy, a man who lived by his
imagination, and could no more help being conspicuous among ordinary human
beings than a gold coin in a plate of silver.

A teen-ager tried to purchase beer one night at the grocery store where
I work. When I asked for an ID, he became abusive and refused to leave.
I threatened to call the police, but he informed me that his friend was
on duty and "Bruce would never arrest me."
"You mean Officer Cabral?" I asked.
"Yeah," growled the teen-ager, "only I know him well enough to call him
Bruce. You have to call him Officer Cabral."
"Not really," I replied. "I usually call him Dad."

When my friend and I went for a swim at a beach near the mouth of the

whether there were sharks in the water. "No," he answered.
My friend and I jumped into the water and started swimming.
After several minutes, I called out to the boy, "Are you sure there
are no sharks here?"
"No sharks," he replied. "Sharks are afraid of crocodiles."

A young lady dismissed the young man to whom she was engaged because he drank.
A few days after she had told him she would never speak to him again, a little
boy brought a note from the wretched young man.
The note read this: "Faithless, yet still beloved Fanny! My sufferings are
more than I can bear. I cannot live without your love. I have therefore just
taken poison, the effect of which I am now beginning to feel. When you read
these lines, I shall have joined the great majority. See that I am decently
buried, and shed a silent tear over my tomb in remembrance of the days gone
by―Your dead George."
When the young lady had finished reading the note, she asked the boy who had
brought it what he was waiting for.
"The gentleman who sent it told me to wait for an answer," was the reply.

Recently, I was in a restaurant when a woman and a young boy sat down
at the neighboring table. I happened to hear their conversation, The
woman asked: "So, how have you been?". And the boy, no more than seven
or eight years old, replied, "Frankly, I've been a little depressed
lately." This remained in my mind because it strengthened my belief that
children were changing. As I remember, my friend and I didn't realize we
were "depressed" until high school. The proof of a change in children has
been increasing steadily. Children don't seem childlike anymore. Children
speak, dress, and behave more like adults than in the past. Little girls
wearing earrings and designer dresses are not uncommon. Boys wearing
hairs styles like movie stars aren't rare anymore. These changes are not
without reason. In the past, children learned the secrets of adulthood
very slowly. Today, however, TV, computers, and the media are pushing
children into adult roles. Indeed, the amount of information available to
children is quickening the beginning of adulthood.

The Ashanti people in Africa name their children according to the day of
the week on which they are born. They believe that Monday boys are quiet
and well-behaved. But Wednesday boys are said to easily get angry and
upset. A recent report on the behavior of Ashanti children shows that it
true. Monday boys are less frequently fighting than chance would have it,
while Wednesday boy are more likely to quarrel. This finding suggests
that names can have a powerful effect upon personal behavior.

It was a math class. The day's lesson was on how to count. "All right,
Jack,"the teacher said to the first grader. "Let's see you count."
Holding out his hand, Jack counted off the numbers. "One, two, three,
four, five."Smiling, the teacher said, "Very good, but can you count any
higher ?" Jack was very glad to do it again in front of everyone.
Lifting his hand high over his head, the boy counted off the same numbers
without changing his voice. After Jack finished, the teacher said, "No,
Jack. I mean, continue counting from six."
Jack.

I saw a boy in the gym playing basketball. He dribbled the ball between
his legs, around his back, and took the ball to the basket. I really
wanted to do that. So I went out for the basketball team. I was
sixteen. This was very late, because most people start playing before
they are ten. People told me I couldn't make it, but I didn't care. I
practiced even on Sundays when my teammates were at home. I kept
practicing, and finally made it on a professional team. Playing
basketball also gave me a way to workout of my feelings.

>>> The Boxer <<< Sung By Simon & Garfunkel
< Artist
Popular
Sound of Silence,
Scarborough Fair, Mrs.Robinson, The Boxer, Bridge Over
Troubled Water
Central Park

New

I am just a poor boy
Though my story is seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocketful of mumbles,
Such are promises, all lies, and jest
Still, a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest Mm mm....

Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone, going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me
Leading me, going home
In the clearing stands a boxer

And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving
But the fighter still remains

The Boxer
Simon & Garfunkel
I am just a poor boy
Though my story is seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocketful of mumbles,
Such are promises, all lies, and jest
Still, a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest Mm mm....
When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers,
In the quiet of a railway station
Running scared, laying low,
Seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know
Lie-la-lie
Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a "come on" from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare there were times whenIwas so lonesome
I took some comfort there Ooo-la-la
Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone, going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me
Leading me, going home
In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter byhis trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving
But the fighter still remains
-
* lay out - 정리하다(arrange),준비하다(prepare).
There were glasses laid out as though there was going to be a
party.
* clearing
* a fighter by his trade
He follows the trade of fiction.
I'm a fixer by trade.(제 직업은 수리공입니다.)
* But the fighter still remains -
* I have squandered ......mumbles -
데 이 노래에 나오는 mumbles(의미없이 중얼거리는 말), 즉 확실하지
* for a pocketful... 의 for는 in exchange for (~과 교환하여) 정도
* Such are......jest - 앞 문장의 mumbles의 내용을 설명하는 말이다.
* Still, a man......rest -그럼에도불구하고(still) 이 권투선수는
이 노래를 만든 Paul Simon은 he 대신 'a man'이라는 표현을
* In the company of strangers -
못한 분위기 (the atmosphere is uncomfortable).
When a man does something wrong and can't take responsibility,
all he can do is running scared.
(being inconspicuous).
* poorer quarter - 빈민가.
* get no offers - (일자리를 수소문 해보았지만) 어느 곳에서도 오라
* "come on"......Avenue - 뉴욕시의 7번가는 Brooklyn 근처에 있는 홍
등가 (red light district)를 말하는데 여기에서의 "come on"은 매춘
" Hi baby, are you looking for something? Can I help you? Come
on,baby! "
* I do declare - 고백하건대(I confess).

Crash Test Dummies
Once there was this kid
Who got into an accident
And couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair
ad turned
From black into bright white
He said that it as from when
The cars had smashed so hard

Once there was this girl
Who wouldn't go and change
Whithe the girls in the changeroom
But when they finally make her
They saw birthmarks all over her body
She couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just been there

But both girl and boy were glad
'Cause one kind had it worse than that
'Cause then there was this boy
