'애송이의, 철없는' 이라는 관용 표현인데요.
어린 아이들이 세수하는 습관에서 그 유래를 찾아볼 수 있는데
흔히 어린 아이들은 별로 깨끗이 씻지 않으면서 옷이며 머리며
물을 다 묻히고 세수를 하지요. 그리고 그렇게 요란을 떨고 난 다음에
여기 저기 묻은 물기를 제대로 닦지 못해서 세수를 하고 난 한참 후에도
귀 뒤에 물기가 종종 남아 있는 것을 볼 수 있게 됩니다.
바로 이러한 모습에서 damp behind the ears가 '애송이의, 철없는'
이라는 뜻을 갖게 된 것이지요.

좀 특이한 경우지요. 간단한 움직임을 나타내주지만 우리
나라사람에게는 언뜻 납득이 가지 않는 문장형태입니다. 하지만
지금까지 귀에 못이 박히게 말했듯이 "그림"을 그려보면 어렵지
않습니다. 우리말로 굳이 "어거지로" 옮기라면 여기서 GO의 뜻은
"쓰이다", 즉 USE의 뜻이 될 것이지만 이렇게 생각하면 "그림"을
그릴 수가 없지요. 그냥 intelligence와 imagination, love 등이
움직이고 도착점이 "천재성"이라는 그림을 그려보세요. 그래야
직접 말을 할때도 자연스럽게 저런 표현이 나옵니다. "쓰이다" 등
어쩌구로 외운다면 "그림"이 그려져 있지 않기 때문에 말을 하는
게 아니라 기억을 더듬어 머리속의 "사전"을 찾게 되니까요.
아주 쉬운 말을 하나 영어로 옮겨보며 "그림"을 풀어보지요. 꼭
그림을 그려봐야 합니다.
"이 부품들은 다른 제품 만드는데도 쓰는데요."
→ "이 부품들은 다른 제품에도 들어 가는데요."
영어로 이 그림을 옮깁니다.
