The root of the trouble springs from too much emphasis upon competitive
success as the main source of happiness. I do not deny that the feeling

likely to become happier if his talent wins recognition. Nor do I deny
that money, up to a certain point, is very capable of increasing
happiness; beyond that point, I do not think it does so. What I do
maintain is that success can only be one ingredient in happiness, and
is too dearly purchased if all the other ingredients have been
sacrificed to obtain it.
경쟁에 성공하는 것이 행복의 근원이라고 지나치게 강조하기 때문에 문제가
생긴다. 성취감이 인생을 보다 즐겁게 해준다는 것을 부인하지는 않는다.
예를 들어 젊은 시절을 무명으로 지냈던 화가는 그의 재능이 인정을 받았을
때 더 행복해 질 것이다. 돈이 어느 정도까지는 행복을 높여준다는 것도
부인하지 않는다. 그러나 그 정도를 넘어서면 그렇게 생각하지 않는다.
내가 주장하려는 것은 성공이란 어디까지나 행복의 한 요소에 불과하며
성공을 위해 다른 모든 요소를 희생한다면 너무나 비싼 대가를 치르는 것이다.
