In November, 1989, the television news announced that East Germans could now travel to the West.
People could get visas to cross the border between East and West.
Immediately people gathered at the Berlin Wall.
People started hacking at the wall with hammers and chisels.
The next day the police started demolishing the wall with bulldozers.
It was a momentous day for Germany and for the whole of Europe.
It was the end of a divided Germany.
It was also the beginning of the end of hostile relationships between East and West Europe.

The driving force of the movement is a feeling that Europeans have lost
control of their future, that they could be incinerated in a war between the
superpowers. In West Germany, the starkest of the protest slogans hits closest
to the gut of the matter: ICH HABE ANGST (I am afraid). It is a feeling being
articulated across Europe by a frightened young generation, and by its elders too.

the city is a harsh reflection of another kind of reality : the social
crosscurrents that are churning through West Germany. It is in West Berlin
that political protest is the shrillest, that the drug problem is the worst,
the squatter movement the most militant.
동서간의 긴장완화로 이 도시의 영웅적인 역할은 퇴색했다. 이 변경지는
