Historians generally agree that the English alphabet descended from ancient
Egypitian hieroglyphics, or "sacred writings," that were first rercorded by
priets more than 5,000 years ago. Hieroglyphics are pictures carved in stone or
inscribed on papyrus. For centuries after Egypt's decline, explorers who
discovered hieroglyphic carvings in Egypt were mystified as to their meaning.

But in 1799 an officer in Napoleon's army discovered near the Egyptian village
of Rosetta a smooth, thick black stone covered with carvings that were divided
into three separate sections. One section was a historical account in Greek, one
was in hieroglyphics, and one was in demotics or simplified hieroglyphics. The
Greek account said that it was exactly the same as the Egyptian writing and this
finding enabled scholars to decipher the mysterious ancient carvings.
그러나 1799년에 나폴레옹 군대의 한 장교가 이집트의 로제타라는 마을 근처에서
매끄럽고 두꺼운 검은 돌 하나를 발견했는데, 이 돌에는 세 부분으로 나뉘어 글자가
새겨져 있었다. 한 부분은 그리스어로 된 역사적인 기록이었고, 또 한 부분은 상형문자로
되어 있었으며, 또 한 부분은 상형문자를 단순하게 만든 글자로 씌어져 있었다.
그리스어로 씌어진 내용은 이집트 글자로 씌어진 내용과 똑 같았는데, 이 사실의
발견으로 학자들은 신비스러운 이집트 상형문자를 해독할 수 있게 되었다.
