He is lovesick.
My husband and I first met while we were theachers in Idaho. We planned to be
married during spring vacation in my hometown in New Mexico. Since we had such
a long distance to drive, we wrote a letter to the superintendent of schools asking
if we might be granted two days of personal leave in order to make the trip. The
superintendent replied that the school board, in determining valid reasons for
personal leave, did not include getting married. Since there was no such provision,
he went on, he would grant us the two days as medical leave - on the premise that
we were both clearly suffering form lovesickness!
남편과 내가 처음 만난 것은 우리가 아이다호에서 선생으로 있을
때였다. 우리는 뉴 멕시코에 있는 나의 고향에서 봄 방학 중에 결혼할
계획이었다. 우리는 그토록 먼 거리를 차를 몰고 가야 하기 때문에, 우리가
근무하는 학교의 교장 선생님에게 편지를 써서 그 여행을 할 수 있도록
이틀간의 개인 휴가를 줄 수 있느냐고 물어보았다. 교장 선생님의 회답에
의하면, 학교 이사회가, 개인휴가를 위한 타당한 이유를 결정하는 데에
결혼하는 것은 포함시키지 않는다는 것이었다. 그런 규정이 없으므로, 그분의
얘기에 의하면, 그 이틀을 의료휴가로 우리에게 제공하겠다는 것이었다-
우리 둘이 분명히 상사병을 앓고있다는 전제로.
