There are rare instances when justice almost ceases to be an abstract
conception. Reward or punishment are meted out quite independent of
human interference. At such times, justice acts like a living force.
When we use a phrase like 'it serves him right', we are, in part,
admitting that a certain set of circumstances has enabled justice to
act of its own accord.
드물긴 하지만 정의라는 것이 구체적인 것으로 작용하는 때가 있다.
인간이 전혀 간여하지 않은 상태에서 상과 벌이 주어지는 것이다. 그럴 때
정의는 살아있는 강력한 존재처럼 작용한다. 우리가 "그것 참 잘됐다."라는
말을 할 때, 어떤 상황들이 합세하여 정의가 스스로 작용했다는 것을
어느 정도 인정하는 것이다.
통증 진료를 하다 보면, X-ray 결과가 뼈는 괜찮은 것으로 나왔는데 왜 아프냐고 따지는 환자도 있고, 상과염이라고 진단하면 MRI도 안 찍어보고 어떻게 아느냐고 치료를 거부하는 환자도 있다.
