Tragic Loss of Lives : 비통한 인명 손실
Nearly 50 military personnel were killed in landslides triggered by
heavy rains that pounded the central part of the peninsula Friday. They
were neither engaged in a military operation nor on a field exercise. The
young lives would not have been sacrificed if military commanders paid
a little more attention to the safety of their men.
금요일 한반도의 중부 지방을 강타한 폭우로 말미암은 산사태로 인해 거
의 50명의 군 병력이 목숨을 잃었다. 그들은 전투 중에 있던 것도 아니고
군사훈련중에 있던 것도 아니었다. 만약 군부대 지휘관들이 자기 부하들의
안전에 대해서 좀더 관심을 기울였었다면 젊은 생명들은 희생당하지 않았을
것이다.

In this context, a few questions are raised. The two Army barracks
that were buried in the Chorwon landslide were built just under a slope
which is prone to mudslides. Analysis of the ground is a must for
construction and military barracks are no exception.

Drawing our special attention was the death of some 50 soldiers who
were mostly buried while asleep in their barracks in landslides
triggered by the torrential rain. The military also suffered huge
facility damage estimated at some 70 billion won. Besides, bridges and
roads were destroyed in 114 places and 15,386 ha of farmland was
inundated as embankments were washed away at over 120 locations.

Each year, landslides cause extensive damage to property, and they occasionally result in loss of life.

Another important role many alders play in the wild, particularly in
mountainous areas, is to check the rush of water during spring melt. In
Japan and elsewhere, the trees are planted to stabilize soil on steep
mountain slopes. Similarly, alders have been planted to stabilize and
rehabilitate waste material left over from old mines, flood deposits,
and landslide areas in both Europe and Asia.
많은 오리나무들이 야생에서 행하는 또 하나의 중요한 역할은, 특히
산악지역에서, 봄에 눈이 녹아 흐를 때 물의 급격한 흐름을 저지하는 것이다.
