Frankly, Korean colleges and universities have been not very interested
in upgrading their educational standards. Their focus has been placed on
recruiting as many students as they can, rather than in improving the
conditions of education they provide for the students they have. In a
sense, this has been possible because of the vast demand for tertiary
education under Korea's peculiar social convention.

Protesting students have been dispersed and the prosecution is ready

parents should all share the responsibility to lead our young students to
tread on the right path where they can vent their idealistic passions,
thereby contributing to social and political progress.

This unsavory phenomenon awakens us to the need for the
establishment of a firm state policy toward student activism beyond
punishing delinquent students and providing them with proper
educational and social guidance. Once a policy based on a national

results satisfying the people.

Because labor-management disputes partly result from social conflicts, the

Q : Doorknocker syndrome

Man is by nature a civic animal.

In addition to the emolument this position offers, you must consider the social prestige it carries with it.

The task of education, said the speaker, is to transmute the primitive selfishness of the child into socially useful modes of behavior.

In those days, many women were trying to work as pilots.
But they faced a lot of competition from all of the male pilots who were looking for work.
And it was still socially unacceptable for women to fly planes.
Many of these women decided that the only way they could become working pilots was by starting their own businesses.
They went into barnstorming, often as performers first, and then working pilots later.
It was a hard life and a dangerous one.
But some of them were successful.

What is wrong with this view? It is certain that technology has an important effect on our lives.
But to suggest that it determines how we live can easily be shown to be wrong.
If you are given a computer, you can send harmful messages to other people, but you don't have to.
How you act will depend on the social circumstances in which you find yourself.
Technology enables us to do things but it does not force us to.
Its influence on society depends on the social circumstances in which it is made available.

Bill : School education should include the skills needed in adult life as well as the study of knowledge and information.
Sports develop such skills by showing students how to keep fit, how to work in a team, and how to practice self-discipline.
Children who haven't been given the chance to take part in physical activities can lose out on social skills when they get older.
On the other hand, if forced to take part in sports in school, they may well discover hidden talents.
Many famous sports people started their careers in this way.
Given this fact, everybody should take a sports class in school.

Sue : Important social skills can be achieved through other activities, such as charity work for old people, instead of sports classes.
When something is forced, the benefits it may bring are destroyed.
After all, you can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
Taking part in a sports class should therefore be a matter of free choice for the students, although encouraged by the school.

Can a person acquire everything he needs to survive through the Internet without ever leaving his home?
A man decided to find out.
He first acquired sponsors.
Then, vowing not to leave for an entire year, he took up residence in an empty house with only a computer and an Internet connection.
He had no problem obtaining either necessities or luxuries.
Online shopping allowed him to acquire furniture, food, and even pets.
Although he agreed to stay at home, his visitors fulfilled his social needs.
He even threw parties via Internet chat rooms.
He also volunteered for an organization for disadvantaged children.

Children's play has been defined as the aimless expenditure of excessive energy.
Many people do not realize, however, that play can foster development in a number of areas.
For example, playing kickball not only helps physical development by promoting gross motor skills, it also cultivates social interaction among peers.
To discuss and agree to the rules of the game, children must use language for communication.
Having fun and playing as a group promotes self-esteem and teaches skills such, teamwork, cooperation, and leadership.
So the next time you see children play, do not think of it as a meaningless activity, think of it as a process of learning.

Man is capable of various kinds of education.
He is possessed of physical, social, religious, intellectual and moral capabilities.
Each requires education.
The education of all makes him complete: the education of part only leaves him deficient.

From ages six to eleven, says Hamburg, "school is a crucible and a defining experience that will heavily influence children's adolescence and beyond.
A child's sense of self-worth depends substantially on his or her ability to achieve in school.
A child who fails in school sets in motion the self-defeating attitudes that can dim prospects for an entire lifespan."
Among the essentials for profiting from school, Hamburg notes, are an ability "to postpone gratification, to be socially responsible in appropriate ways, to maintain control over their emotions, and to have an optimistic outlook"―in other words, emotional intelligence.

Being able to put aside one's self-centered focus and impulses has social benefits:
it opens the way to empathy, to real listening, to taking another person's perspective.
Empathy, as we have seen, leads to caring, altruism, and compassion.
Seeing things from another's perspective breaks down biased stereotypes, and so breeds tolerance and acceptance of differences.
These capacities are ever more called on in our increasingly pluralistic society, allowing people to live together in mutual respect and creating the possibility of productive public discourse.
These are basic arts of democracy.

Fashions are the currently accepted styles of appearance and behavior.
The fact that some style is called a "fashion" implies a social recognition that it is temporary and will eventually be replaced by a new style.
In small-scale, traditional communities, fashions are virtually unknown.
In these communities everyone of similar age and sex wears much the same clothing and behaves in much the same way, and there is little change in styles from year to year or even from generation to generation.
In modern societies, however, fashions may change very rapidly indeed: automobile bodies assume new contours every year, and women's hemlines rise and fall with the passage of the seasons.

Most offices, by the very nature of their structure and function, are geared to stability or slow change.
Accelerated change of the kind that a computer brings is likely to prove disrupting and disturbing.
This is because people in stable organizations tend to expect a steady continuation of existing arrangements, and because departments unaccustomed to change frequently find they have become too inflexible to assimilate it without stress.
Social as well as technical factors are therefore highly relevant to a successful adaptation to new techniques.

On the other hand, take the dictum of J.S. Mill, the classical individualist: 'Men are not, when brought together, converted into another kind of substance.'
Of course not.
But the fallacy is to suppose that they existed, or had any kind of substance, before being 'brought together'.
As soon as we are born, the world gets to work on us and transforms us from merely biological into social units.

Every human being at every stage of history or pre-history is born into a society and from his earliest years is moulded by that society.
The language which he speaks is not an individual inheritance, but a social acquisition from the group in which he grows up.

As early as 1787 the Enlightenment philosopher Condorcet published a treatise on the rights of women.
He held that women had the same 'natural rights' as men.
During the French Revolution of 1789, women were extremely active in the fight against the old feudal regime.
For example, it was women who led the demonstrations that forced the king away from his palace at Versailles.
Women's groups were formed in Paris.
In addition to the demand for the same political rights as men, they also demanded changes in the marriage laws and in women's social conditions.

Of course, as we grow older, we learn that the blunt expression of such curiosity will not put us at the top of the popularity charts.
We learn how to be kind, considerate of others' feelings, silent about their flaws, approving of their virtues.
We learn how to get along in the world by "not making waves."
In short, we become socially "acceptable."

Inherent in this basic goal is the assumption that social stability is meaningless ―if not impossible―independent of the stability and dignity of human beings.

The social experiences and values of the old and the young have always been in conflict; if younger people did not question the advice and beliefs of their parents, little change or 'progress' would ever occur.
But with the accelerating speed of change in modern times, the conflicts between members of different generations, or between those people anxious to adjust to change and those less inclined to do so, were in danger of becoming more harmful than helpful.
Furthermore, the very phrase by which these conflicts are described, the 'generation gap', was becoming out of date.

But the social habits of women are now changing.

A political and economic conservative, he displayed a strong social
conscience that showed itself in deeds rather than words.

Italians survive in spite of a vast gap between them and their increasingly weak
and ineffective governments. They survive in spite of a selfare system that is out of
control, schools and social services that are in disarray and, perhaps worst of all, a
bureaucracy so swollen and inept that it is mocked as lacci e laccioli, shackles and
snares.

This would be something remarkable in anyone in any walk of life; but in someone
whose position was humble and obscure it might not be so surprising as it was in a
world-famous statesman who has left a deep mark, and this on the whole world and
not just on his own country. In this great statesman, the lovable human being was not
smothered by the eminent public figure; I should say that, in Nehru, there was not even
the faintest touch of pomposity or self-importance or self-consciousness. He retained the
spontaneity and the buoyancy of youth after he had been carrying for years an unusually
heavy burden of office. It was not till his last years that the unforeseen breach between
India and China began to bow him down under its weight.

In his study of historical change, McLuhan believes that the invention of a certain,
crucially relevant tool or machine initiates huge changes in the environment which, in
turn, engineer transformations in both man's social relations and his perception of
experience.

Much recent housing and city planning has been handicapped because those

may be at the mercy of social or economic forces, but we, as citizens, can work to change
our society.

There are certain things that the world quite obviously needs:
tentativeness, as opposed to dogmatism, in our beliefs; an expectation of
cooperation, rather than competition, in social relations; a lessening of envy and
collective hatred. These are things which education could produce without much
difficulty.

With detente, the heroic role faded. The outpost turned inward, and today
the city is a harsh reflection of another kind of reality : the social

the squatter movement the most militant.

When the newspaper chooses to make a scapegoat of some perhaps quite
harmless person, the results may be very terrible. Fortunately, as yet
this is a fate which most people escape through their obscurity; but as
publicity gets more and more perfect in its methods, there will be an
increasing danger in this novel form of social persecution. This is too
grave a matter to be treated with disdain by the individual who is its
victim, and whatever may be thought of the great principle of the freedom
of the press, I think the line will have to be drawn more sharply than
it is by the existing libel law.

Success often bears within itself the seed of destruction, for it may very
well cut the author off from the material that was its occasion.
He enters a new world. He is made much of. He must be almost super-human if
he is not captivated by the notice taken of him by the great and remains
insensible to the attentions of beautiful women. He grows accustomed to
another way of life, probably more luxurious than that to which he has
been used, and to people who have more of the social graces than those with
whom he has associated before. They are more intellectual and their superficial
brilliance is engaging. How difficult it is for him then to move freely still
in the circles with which he has been familiar and which have given him his
subjects!

Most people try to select occupations that will result in large incomes.
This attitude of affluence results from the demands of society.
One must have enough money to pay the rent and to buy food.
Seldom does the middle class American dare to challenge the idea that
money and glory are the most important goals in his life.
Also, he rarely has the courage to execute a job simply because he
likes the work.

Because man is a social being he cares for the judgment of his fellows.
He is gratified by praise and hurt by blame. To possess a good reputation
with family, neighbors, friends, to avoid social condemnation is
undoubtedly a motive for good conduct.
Pliny stated the case with substantial truth, though perhaps with some
exaggeration, when he said, "How few there are who preserve the same
delicacy of conduct in secret as when exposed to the view of the world!"
The truth is, the generality of mankind stand in awe of public opinion,
while conscience is feared only by the few. A saying of the Arabs puts
the point with cynical brevity: "In a town where you know no one do
whatever you like."

What we desperately need is a worldwide movement for responsible technology.
First, we must submit new technology to a set of severe environmental tests
before we release it in our midst, so that we may stop adding to pollution,
noise and filth.
Second, and much more complexed, we must question the long-term impact of
a technical innovation on the social, cultural and physiological
surroundings, as well as on the physical environment.

How often are we introduced to someone only to forget his or her name
moments later? In fact, many times we never knew the name. Today
introductions are made in an unclear manner so that it is very hard to
remember others' names. Forgetting people's names often means we do not
really care about them. When we know their names, we are saying, "You are
important. I remember you." A clear introduction should be made,
therefore, if you want to build good social relationships with others.

Global civil society is in one sense a separate social system growing up around international society and giving rise to regimes of its own.
Even so, its emergence has far-reaching implications for the dynamics of international society because it provides a social base for nonstate actors that helps them to participate effectively in the creation and operation of international regimes, which in turn influence the character of international society.
The emergence of a global civil society is partly a simple matter of material resources.
The introduction of the fax machine and the dramatic growth of the World Wide Web, largely as a function of global civil society rather than international society, has allowed nonstate actors to forge effective global alliances that are not subject to national governmental control.

But more drastic changes will occur in the social position and role of the school.
Though long a central institution, it has been "of society" rather than "in society."
It concerned itself with the young, who were not yet citizens, not yet responsible, not yet in the workforce.

Above all, in the knowledge society, the school becomes accountable for performance and results.

One should expect the sense of shame to be blurred where socialization of the young becomes ineffectual, and social cohesion is weakened.

The feat demanded of most if not all governing bodies as the world heads toward the twenty-first century is a threefold one:
simultaneously to provide military security for its national interests, and to satisfy the socioeconomic needs of its citizenry, and to ensure sustained growth,
this last being essential both for the positive purposes of affording the required guns and butter at the present, and for the negative purpose of avoiding a relative economic decline which could hurt the people's military and economic security in the future.

It hardly needs emphasizing that since the varied demands of defense spending/military security, social/consumer needs, and investment for growth involve a triangular competition for resources, there is no absolutely perfect solution to this tension.
Probably the best that can be achieved is that all three aims be kept in rough harmony,
but just how that balance is reached will always be strongly influenced by national circumstances, not by some theoretical definition of equilibrium.

There are plenty of signs of the growing gap between the information rich and the information poor in our evermore complex, technology driven, so-called information society.

Slickness in presentation works against the journalistic ideal of promoting intelligent citizen involvement in the political and social process by seeming to be so complete that nothing more can be said.

The infant must learn the power and uses of language he must gain it by conscious effort and by discipline.

Sound by sound, word by word, the child acquires this wondrous vehicle for making his wants known, for expressing his feelings and thoughts, for understanding what others wish him to know or do.
And constantly expanding and improving his command of language as he becomes an adult, he develops the capacity for thought and communication on the most abstract and sophisticated planes.

While impressing upon man the awe and mystery of the unknown that surrounds him on all sides, they have discouraged him from trying to understand not only the unknown but what might come in the way of social effort.

The legal profession has always had an ambiguous social position.

The family status of early Roman jurisconsults may have been more important than their legal expertise in securing such a position, but by the time of the principate it was their legal eminence that made them respected.

It is so very clear from her words and actions that Mother Teresa was a living saint; yet, when she was alive, a prominent columnist castigated her, implying that she was a sexual pervert and arguing that her charitable work merely served to buttress the social, economic and political status quo.
Why the vicious attack on Mother Teresa's character? Because those who already have lost their purity naturally envy, hate, ridicule and persecute people with purity of heart, mind and soul who are trying to help young people remain pure, too.

Mother Teresa throughout all her life manifested the virtues of a genuinely liberated person: Faith, hope, courage, charity.
Mother Teresa possessed the kind of beauty that causes one to think of Christmas and of Easter and―ultimately ―of God.
It is not the kind of beauty celebrated by the Beautiful People of society who identify with wealth, popularity, social prestige and status symbols.
Nor is it the beauty exhibited by Playboy and Penthouse models, television and movie idols and contestants in Miss Universe pageants.
Rather, Mother Teresa possessed a moral and spiritual beauty―reflected in her face, eyes and good deeds―which far transcends mere physical beauty.
Mother Teresa was a living saint in heaven.

When many roles make conflicting demands on you, you may feel quite uncomfortable and at times frustrated.
For example, your family is going on a picnic this coming Sunday.
But your best friend wants you to join his or her birthday party on the same day.
When such role conflicts occur, you need to do more important things first.
Thus, the ability to decide what to do in what order is an essential skill to fulfill multiple social roles.

This year saw the emergence of social and art features with a strong story line as a mainstream genre.
In addition to "The Way Home," movie fans raved about Lee Chang-dong's "Oasis," a daring love story between a social misfit and a woman afflicted with cerebral palsy, as well as Im Kwon-taek's "Chihwaseon," a period drama on the genius painter Jang Seung-eop.

Kang noted, "Children's cancer is a social disease that is caused by pollution and needs the public and the family's attention because this is not only a concern for others, but can also happen to any family."

A low birth rate signifies a higher level of education and the growing presence of women in the work force.
Added to that are a greater hesitancy toward marriage by women, a growing tendency toward staying single and the world's third-highest divorce rate.
Thus, the government will do well to start resolving realistic and immediate issues at hand, such as sharing the burdens of child rearing and establishing mid- to long-term social policies to prop up the birth rate.
The governments of Japan, Singapore and Taiwan have child-birth incentive policies from which Korea could learn much.

Then, in 1950 the Census Bureau radically changed its definition of
"urban" to take account of the new vagueness of city boundaries. In
addition to persons living in incorporated units of 2,500 or more, the
census now included those who lived in unincorporated units of that
size, and also all persons living in the densely settled urban fringe,
including both incorporated and unincorporated areas located around
cities of 50,000 inhabitants or more. Each such unit, conceived as an
integrated economic and social unit with a large population nucleus, was
named a Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA).
Standard Metropolitan
Statistical Area (SMSA /

Each SMSA would contain at least (a) one central city with 50,000
inhabitants or more or (b) two cities having shared boundaries and
constituting, for general economic and social purposes, a single
community with a combined population of at least 50,000, the smaller of
which must have a population of at least 15,000. Such an area included
the county in which the central city is located, and adjacent counties
that are found to be metropolitan in character and economically and
socially integrated with the county of the central city. By 1970, about
two-thirds of the population of the United States was living in these
urbanized areas, and of that figure more than half were living outside
the central cities.

The dulotic species of ants, however, are the supreme social parasites.
Consider, for example, the unusual behavior of ants belonging to the
genus Polyergus. All species of this ant have lost the ability to care
for themselves. The workers do not forage for food, feed their brood or
queen, or even clean their own nest. To compensate for these deficits,
Polyergus has become specialized at obtaining workers from the related
genus Formica to do these chores.

Nineteenth-century American hotelkeepers, who were no longer the genial,
deferential "hosts" of the eighteenth-century European inn, became
leading citizens. Holding a large stake in the community, they exercised
power to make it prosper. As owners or managers of the local "palace of
the public," they were makers and shapers of a principal community
attraction. Travelers from abroad were mildly shocked by this high
social position.

In colonial America, people generally covered their beds with decorative
quilts resembling those of the lands from which the quilters had come.
Wealthy and socially prominent settlers made quilts of the English
style, cut from large lengths of cloth of the same color and texture
rather than stitched together from smaller pieces. They made these until
the advent of the Revolutionary War in 1775, when everything English
came to be frowned upon.

Each village had two chiefs. The village chief dealt with land disputes
and religious affairs. The war chief led the men in fighting during
occasional conflicts that broke out with neighboring villages and
directed the men in community building projects. The cohesive political
and social organization of the Anasazi made it almost impossible for
other groups to conquer them.

School-aged daughters of employed mothers tend to have consistently high
academic performance. They also tend to develop close relationships with
their fathers if they are warm, supportive, and participate actively in
parenting. School-aged sons tend to have better social and personality
adjustments as well as higher academic achievement, if their mothers
work outside the home. However, sons of lower socioeconomic families
with a working mother may be less admiring of their fathers, perhaps
because of the perceived notion of economic failure on their part.
