I believe the reflective portion of mankind is divided into two groups:
나는 사상가들이 두 부류로 나누인다고 본다.
those who are interested in people and care about them; and those who are interested in ideas.
하나는 사람에 관심을 두고 사람을 배려하는 부류이고 다른 하나는 사상에 관심을 두는 부류가 그것이다.
The first group forms the pragmatists and tends to make the best statesmen.
첫 번째 집단은 실용주의자들로 이루어져 있고 위대한 정치가들이 되는 경향이 있다.
The second is the intellectuals;
두 번째 집단은 지식인들이다.
and if their attachment to ideas is passionate, and not only passionate but programmatic, they are almost certain to abuse whatever power they acquire.
지식인들의 사상에 대한 애착이 강렬할 때, 강렬할 뿐만 아니라 계획적일 경우 그들은 그들이 획득하는 어떠한 권력도 남용할 것임은 거의 확실한 일이다.
For, instead of allowing their ideas of government to emerge from people, shaped by observation of how people actually behave and what they really desire, intellectuals reverse the process, deducing their ideas first from principle and then seeking to impose them on living men and women.
왜냐하면 지식인들은 자신들의 통치사상을 사람으로부터 도출하거나, 사람들이 실제 어떻게 행동하며 또 그들의 진정한 욕구가 무엇인가를 관찰함으로써 그것을 정립하지 않고 이 같은 과정을 뒤바꾸어 자신들의 사상을 먼저 원칙에서 도출한 다음 그 사상을 사람들에게 강요하려 든다.
