8. 1997년 겨울도 끝났다.
8. The winter of 1997 came to an end.
많이 봐온 문장 형태일 겁니다. 그래서 해석은 되는데 거꾸로
영어로 할 때는 잘 쓰지 못하지요. "끝났다"면 "end," "멈췄다"면
"stop"이 고작인 경우가 많지요. 그럼 END나 STOP 등 간단한
동사를 쓰면 될 걸 왜 "COME TO AN END" 같이 귀찮게 쓸까요?
먼저 드라마틱하지요. 단순히 STOP이라고 하면 밋밋하게 멈췄다는
결과 밖에는 전달하지 못합니다. 멈추기까지의 "행위" 또는
"움직임," 즉 알맹이는 사라져버리고 그 다음 "이렇게 됐다"는
결과만 알려줍니다.
둘째, 결과만 있다 보니 "움직임"과 그 결과를 묘사하기 위한
방법이 제한 돼 있습니다. 묘사에 가장 능수능란한 게
형용사입니다. 형용사가 이땅에 태어난 사명이 바로 그거니까.
형용사를 쓰려면 명사형이 와야 합니다. Native의 머리에는 처음
"STOP"이라는 동사가 스쳐가다가도 행위나 결과를 묘사하기 위해
형용사가 그 뒤를 따르고, 그 다음 STOP을 명사로 만들고 그
명사에 도달하기 위한 움직임과 형용사를 집어넣기 위한 수단으로
COME TO가 떠오릅니다. 아주 자연스럽게 다음과 같은 문장이
튀어나오지요.
The car came to a sudden stop.
차가 갑자기 멈췄다.
한가지 더 살펴보지요. 행위, 즉 움직임까지도 자세히 묘사하려는
Native의 머리에는 그에 해당하는 동사가 떠오릅니다. 이 동사가
COME의 자리를 메꿉니다. 그럼 다음 같은 문장이 튀어나오지요.
The car screeched to a sudden stop.
차가 끼리릭 소리를 내며 갑자기 멈췄다.
여기서 한가지 번뜩 머리를 스치는 게 있어야 합니다. 기본
동사를 배우면 나머지 동사들은 위의 문장처럼 기본 동사로
부족한 뜻을 보충하기 위해 대체 사용할 수 있다는 것입니다.
이런 동사들은 기본 동사와 사용법이 거의 같고 뜻만 다른 경우가
대부분이기 때문에 기본 동사만 제대로 배워놓으면 나머지는 거저
먹기지요.
John came to a halt and tried to regain his breath.
존은 멈춰 서서 숨을 돌렸다.
The elevator creaked to a halt at the second floor.
엘리베이터가 끽 소리를 내며 2층에서 멈췄다.
그러나 2006년 파산과 함께 워크아웃, 매각을 거쳐 대우일렉트로닉스, 동부대우전자로 사명이 바뀌었고 지난해에는 대유위니아그룹으로 인수돼 현재의 위니아대우로 간판을 바꿔 달았다.
