Our early ancestors may have used the fingers of their hands or cut notches like /// on tree branches to indicate how many apples they had picked that day.

Thus special words did become useful substitutes for notches.

그래서 특별한 단어들이 빗금에 대한 유용한 대체물이 되었다.
