'~를 뜯어 내다' 라는 말이지요. 예를 들어서 rip paper라고 하면 '종
이를 찢다'라는 말이 되고 rip off paper라고 하면 '종이를 뜯어내다'
라는 말이 됩니다. 그러나 1960년대 미국인 사회 내에서 rip off 라는
말이 은어적인 표현으로 '~을 훔치다, 사기 치다' 라는 뜻으로 쓰이기
시작을 했고 또 그들은 rip과 off을 하이픈(-)으로 연결을 해서 a rip
-off 하는 말을 '도둑질, 사기' 라는 말의 신조어로 만들어서 쓰기 시
작했지요. 오늘 날에 와서는 도둑질이나 사기 뿐만 아니라 '바가지 씌
우는 것'도 rip-off라고 합니다. 우리 말에서 부정적으로 자금을 탈취

어라고 이해하시면 되겠습니다. 그래서 That's a rip-off! 라고 하면
'터무니 없는 돈을 뜯어 내는 것' 이란 뜻으로 바가지를 씌운다는 뜻
입니다. 참고로 expensive (비싸다)와 rip-off라는 말은 조금 다르다
는 것을 알아 두십시요. expensive는 물건 값 자체가 비싸다는 말이지
바가지를 씌운다는 의미는 아닙니다.
