This is to formally invite you to the reception which I have already
mentioned to you informally. The reception will be held in the "Palace
Garden" the New Town Hotel from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. on Friday, November
23. The day was chosen to match the theme of the gathering, i.e.,
"thanksgiving." It was also chosen so as to permit busy people to
attend without interfering with business schedules.

Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling.
Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the
shower or on the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes
both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole
universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a
revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a
child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain
predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance
conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is
known of other religions.

지푸라기, 또는 빨대를 뜻하는 straw가 투표를 뜻하는 말과 함께
쓰인 말이 바로 straw vote 이지요. 비공식적인 여론 조사를 뜻하는것
입니다. straw vote는 1842년에 미국 펜실베니아의 어느 신문사에서
한가지 주제를 가지고 시골 마을 주민들의 생각을 앙케이트 조사를 했
다고 하지요. 거기에서 유래가 된 표현인데 당시에는 바람부는 방향을
알고 싶을 때 작고 가벼운 지푸라기 (straw)를 공중에 집어 던져 보는
습관이 있었답니다. 왜냐하면 지푸라기는 아주 작고 가벼워서 아주 약
한 바람의 방향도 알아낼 수 있었기 때문이지요. 그 이후에 바람의 방
향을 알아낼 때 지푸라기를 이용하던 이 습관은 사람들이 어떻게 생각
하는지 알아내기 위해서, 또 대중의 반응을 시험하기 위해서 이런 비
유적인 뜻으로 쓰이기 시작했습니다. 그리고 지푸라기로 풍향을 알아
내는 것은 간단하면서 손쉬운 방법이기 때문에 절차와 형식에 따라야
하는 공식적인 조사가 아닌 비공식적인 여론 조사를 뜻하는 말로도 쓰
이고 있습니다. straw vote는 '비공식적인 여론 조사'를 뜻합니다.
