pipe는 '둥근 관, 담배 파이프' 라는 뜻 외에 '피리, 목관 악기,
호각' 이라는 뜻이 있습니다. 스코틀랜드의 전통악기인 bagpipe의 복
수형을 pipes 라고 쓰기도 합니다. 지금처럼 확성기나 전기 장치를 이
용해서 소리를 크게 내는 마이크 시설이 없었던 시절 항해중인 배에서
는 이런 호각 (pipe) 를 이용해서 선원들에게 행동을 지시하곤 했습니
다. 선원들 사이에는 미리 약속이 되어서 어떤 멜로디를 불면 어떤 행
동을 할 것인가가 정해져 있었습니다. 그 중에서 밤에 취침 시간을 알
리는 호각 소리, 즉 이제 불필요한 소리를 내지 말고 모두 잠자리에
