[比較] regardless, irregardless, irrespective
구어에서는 regardless 대신에 irregardless를 써서, I will leave irregardless of what he says라고 하는 수가 있지만, 무식한 비표준적인 용법이다. 이 말은 regardless와 그와 같은 뜻인 irrespective를 혼동한 데서 온 것이다.
regardless와 irrespective에는 언제나 of가 따른다.
The arrangements must be made regardless of (or irrespective of) his personal feelings in the matter.
regardless를 부사로 쓰는 경우는 영국·미국에 모두 있다. 속어 용법으로 간주한다.
I'll do it regardless(하여간 그것을 하겠다)는 regardless of what you think(네가 어떻게 생각하든 상관없이), regardless of that might happen(무슨 일이 일어나든 상관없다)의 뜻이다.
regret, sorry, deplore, lament
regret는 공식적인(formal) 말이다.
Mr. Lee regrets that he will be unable to accept the kind invitation of Mr. Kim for the sixteenth.
보통 쓰이는 sorry만큼 흔히 쓰인다. be sorry는 일반적인 말이고, I'm sorry I made you cry.의 경우처럼 특히 속요(俗謠)에서 감상적인 분위기를 감돌게 하는 말이다.
deplore는 regret deeply를 의미하며, 비난하는 뜻을 품고 있다.
He deplored the conduct of compatriots in European cities.
이른바 「분노에 의해서라기 보다는 비탄의 뜻으로」흔히 쓰이는 말로, 보통 짐짓 겸양과 위선의 의미가 함축된 말이다. lament는 무엇에 대해서 슬픔 또는 유감을 느끼거나 표시하는 것을 의미한다. deplore와 달리 슬픔이 외면적인 목소리로 드러나는 것이다.

흔히 그렇게 쓰는 것이지만, 단지 마음속 감정에 대해서 I lament that your conduct has made it necessary for me to speak to your father.처럼 사용하는 것은 멋을 부린 용법이다.

→ 이 표현은 말하는 상황이나 문장의 높낮이에 따라 의미의 차이가
① 정말로 의문이 생겨서 " 뭘 기다리세요? "라고 묻는 말이 되고
② (빨리 하지 않고) 뭘 기라디느냐 ? (역설적인 말)
여기서는 역설적인 분위기의 말로 쓰였습니다.
◈ I gave him two grand yesterday.
→ 어제 그녀석에게 2천달러를 줬어.
→ grand는 속어로 천(千),1000 을 의미합니다.
→ 해석을 '그녀석'으로 한 이유는 grand가 주는 분위기 자체가
속어이기 때문에 이 분위기에 적합하게 하기 위함에서 입니다.
> " break the ice "는 어떤 상황에서 사용하는지요 ?
- 직역하면 '얼음을 깨다'라는 말이죠.
즉, " 서먹서먹한 분위기를 풀다. "라는 뜻입니다.
ex) He broke the ice by cracking a joke.

입니다. " 그거 괜찮은데. "의 분위기는 " That's great/good/
wonderful. "에서 찾을 수 있고, " 저런, 안타깝군." 이라든지,
" 유감이군요. "의 의미는 " That's too bad/a shame. "이 갖고
있습니다. 또, " That's funny. "는 " 그거 재미있군. "정도로
이해하면 됩니다.

bouncer - 몰아내는 사람이란 뜻으로 술집이나 나이트클럽에서

된 사람을 뜻한다.
술좌석에서 분위기를 명랑하게 이끌어 나가며 즐겁게 술을 마시는 사람을
가리켜 merry drinker라고 합니다. 반대로 술좌석을 어둡고 무겁게 하며,
때로는 울음가지 터뜨리는 사람을 maudlin drinker 또는 sentimental
drinker 라고 합니다.

bad drinker라고 합니다.
be in the groove 여기에서 groove는 '홈, 바퀴자국' 이란 말입니다.
그렇지만 in the groove 라는 말은 숙어로 '청중이 열광 하도록 연주되다'
라는 뜻으로 사용이 됩니다. 이 표현은 현재 미국의 젊은 세대들 사이에서
'지금의 기분이나 분위기에 맞게'라는 의미로도 사용이 되는데
be in the groove는 재즈 음악과 스윙 음악이 유행하던 시대에
나타난 신종어입니다. 이것은 음악 연주를 듣던 축음기 레코드에 새겨
있는 홈에서 생겨난 말입니다. 즉, 바늘로 레코드의 홈이 있는 음악을
즉, groove에 있는 음악을 얼마나 정확하게 재생하느냐를 의미했던 표
현이지요. 이 표현이 사용되기 시작했던 것을 불과 10년에서 15년밖에
되지 않았구요. 일반적으로 매끄럽게 제 기능을 다하는 것에 사용이
되지만 그 중에서도 음악과 관련된 말에 많이 사용이 됩니다.
이런 분위기가 되어서는 안돼요.
