한국 회사의 영문소개서에서 발견한 최고 걸작은 이런 문장이었다. “Our company was erected in 1977.”‘erect’라는동사는‘세우다’‘건립하다’라는 뜻이 있지만 동시에남자의발기상태를나타내는 말이기도 하다.한국의 한 사찰에서 부처님 조성시기를 설명한 글에서도 이런 문장을 본 적이 있다. “This Buddha was erected in 1340.” 미국인이본다면상당히 불경스러운 상상을 하지 않을 수 없는 표현이다.
회사를 세운다는 의미를 전하려면 ‘establish’ 또는 ‘found’라는 동사를 쓰면 된다. “Our company was established in 1945”라는 식으로.
