쿠싱증후군은 천식, 관절염 등의 질환 치료를 위해 코르티코스테로이드를 복용하거나 부신피질 자극 호르몬이 과다 분비될 경우 혹은 '코르티솔' 호르몬의 과다 분비로 인해 생기는 희귀 질환이다.
Cushing's syndrome is a rare disease that occurs when corticosteroids are taken to treat diseases such as asthma and arthritis, when adrenocorticotropic hormones are secreted excessively, or when the hormone 'cortisol' is secreted excessively.

ACTH (부신피질 자극 호르몬) 부신피질을 자극하는 호르몬.

Addison's disease (Addison 병, 에디슨씨 질환, 아디슨병) 결핵, 자가면역 질환, 종양 등 여
러 원인으로 부신피질이 파괴되어 부신피질 호르몬 생산이 감소되어 발생하는 병을
Addison's disease라 하며, 치료를 받지 못하면 사망할 수도 있다.

adrenal cortex (부신 피질) 부신 피질의 내측에 있으며 육안적으로 황색으로 심부에서 수질
과 접하는 곳은 황갈색이다. 피질은 표층에서 심층을 향해서 선세포의 배열 방법이 다르기
때문에 3가지 zone으로 나뉜다. 가장 바깥은 비교적 얇은 층인 zona glomerulosa, 가운데
층은 zona fasciculata, 가장 안쪽은 zona reticulata이다. zona glomerulosa에서 aldosterone
이 분비되며, 부신피질의 재생을 담당하는 층이다. cortisol은 zona fasciculata에서,
dehydroepiandrostenecione은 zona reticulata에서 분비된다.

corticosteroid (코티코스테로이드, 부신피질 호르몬) 부신 피질 (adrenal cortex)에서 발견되
는 결정형 스테로이드. any of the steroids elaborated by the adrenal cortex (excluding
the sex hormones of adrenal origin) in response to the release of corticotrophin
(adrenocorticotropic hormone) by the pituitary gland, to any of the synthetic equivalents
of these steroids, or to angiotensin II. They are divided, according to their predominant
biological activity, into three major groups: glucocorticoids, chiefly influencing
carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism; mineralocorticoids, affecting the regulation of
electrolyte and water balance; and C19 androgens. Some corticosteroids exhibit both
types of activity in varying degrees, and others exert only one type of effect. The
corticosteroids are used clinically for hormonal replacement therapy, for suppression of
ACTH secretion by the anterior pituitary, as antineoplastic, antiallergic, and
anti-inflammatory agents, and to suppress the immune response. Called also
adrenocortical hormone and corticoid.

cortisol (코티솔) 부신피질에서 추출된 스테로이드 호르몬의 하나. 단백질로부터의 당의 생
성을 촉진한다. 또 지질 대사에도 영향을 준다. 11베타 하이드록시 스테로이드 하이드로지나
아제에 의해 코티존이 된다.

dexamethasone (덱사메타손) 9-fluoro-11β,17,21-trihydroxy-16α-methylpregna-1,4-diene
-3,20-dione. 백색 무취의 결정성 분말.C22H29FO5. 항염증성의 부신피질 스테로이드로서 교
원병 및 알러지 상태를 포함한 각종 질환에 내복 또는 국소적용한다. 또한 어떤 신생물질환
및 출혈성 빈혈에도 사용하며 Cushing 징후군의 감별에도 사용한다.
