"What (enrollment figures) will show in the fall is hard to
say," said Peggy Blumenthal, vice president for educational
services at the Institute of international Education. "The
economic situation is certainly having an impact on their
lives."
In January, colleges and universities surveyed by the
Institute reported decli es of up to 10 percent for Malaysia,
Thailand and Indonesia, and up to 20 percent for South Korea.

have talked with many worried students since last fall, said
Daphne Johnston, associate director of international student

"We said good-bye to many at Christmas," Johnston said.
"We noticed a sharp decline in new arrivals in January. We
expect we'll see the biggest reduction in numbers this
fall."
