[比較] stern, severe, austere
stern은 눈물이나 애원에 조금도 동하지 않는, 비타협적인·신축성 없는·불굴의 굳은 결의를 강조하고, 때로는 접근하기 어려운, 남을 멀리하는 모습·태도·성질을 암시한다. 이를테면 a severe judge는 냉정하고 공명정대하지만, 겉으로 다정하게 보일 수도 있다. 그러나 a stern judge는 온화하거나 관대한 성질을 밖으로 나타내 보이는 따위의 일은 하지 않는다.

austere는 austeros(=dry)에서 왔다. 어원적으로는 돌능금(crab apple)같은 과일에 독특한, 수분과 단맛이 없는 데서 유래된 것이다. 지금도 때로 신맛이 나는 과일이나 포도주에 대해서 쓰이지만, 주로 사람·사람의 습관·생활양식·생활환경·예술작품 따위에 쓰인다.

참고로 charge의 용례를 좀 살펴보면
