ANS) Through centuries men have fought to come out from the shadow of slavery into the sunlight of freedom. Freedom did not come overnight. It has taken hundreds of years and the efforts of millions of people to find ways and means to make democracy work. The desire for a kind of government that would give freedom to all people has always been strong among men. As the centuries went by, men discovered that 'government by the people' is the ideal form of government. Because government by the people means government for the good of all the people.

Yongsan Base Park Plan :
We welcome the Seoul city government's plan to turn the Yongsan
military compound now used by the Eighth U.S. Army into a public
park. Coming on top of the construction of a sports park in the Ttuksom
area in eastern Seoul and an ecological park around Yoido Islet of the
Han River as well, this will add substantially to the green areas in
which the people of Seoul are able to relax and slough off the troubles

Fifty-one years have elapsed since Korea was freed from the
Japanese yoke. But the nation remains under the bondage of division
with feuding, enmity, hatred, confrontation and bitter antagonism
still existing between South and North Korea. The two Koreas should
exert renewed efforts to open an era of coexistence by promoting
peace on the peninsula and bilateral cooperation.

Japan put Korea under its colonial rule and committed atrocities
against its people. Liberated from the 35 years of Japanese occupation,
however, Koreans fought a fratricidal war at the forefront of the Cold
War. While the nation still struggles to relieve itself from the deep
agony of national division, Japan enjoys the status of an economic
superpower.

⊙ Etiquette...
Tiket
“ It's against etiquette ! ” 《
“ Bad manners ! ”
“ You have such good manners ” 《
※ “ Where are your manners ? ” 《

1) ∼ you know, ∼
=================
e.g.
> You know,he...he...wants to get away from you.
> She left,you know,yes,she left 2 days ago.

"Don't whistle until you are out of the woods."
에 바라보는 그들이, "We are now out of woods(이제 숲을 벗어났다)."
until you are out of woods."
"We're still in woods."

If you get a blow-out while you are driving, you should know what to do.
A blow-out is a sudden flat tire.
It can be a very frightening experience, especially if you are traveling at high speeds.
If your car gets a blow out, the first thing to do is to hold very tightly to the steering wheel.
You can easily lose control of the car if you do not have a good hold of the steering wheel.
The next step is to get off the road.
However, you must not try to stop or turn too quickly.
After you check the traffic, you should move over to the side of the road and slow down gradually.
Then you should turn on your flashing lights so other cars can see you.

His wife, Mary, also wants to relax from her stressful day.
She, however, wants to find relief by talking about the problems of her day.
The tension slowly building between them gradually becomes resentment.
Tom secretly thinks Mary talks too much, while Mary feels ignored.
Without understanding their differences they will grow further apart.

Hospitals are increasing infant security to prevent the kidnapping of babies.
For example, hospitals are providing guards to patrol their halls and conducting periodic safety training.
Also, hospitals are requiring babies to wear ID bracelets.
These bracelets automatically alert an electronic security system if they are beyond a specific area or removed.
Furthermore, more hospitals are including the mother's thumb print and the baby's footprint in medical records.
Finally, many hospitals no longer release birth announcements to the local media.

For the past half-century, those lucky enough to have been born in a rich country have had every prospect of growing richer.
On average, incomes in Britain, America and Japan have easily doubled over that time.
On top of this come the benefits of longer lives of better quality, thanks to advances in medicine
and to a plethora of consumer goods making living easier and more enjoyable.
You might even expect folks to be a great deal happier today than in the 1950s.
You would be wrong, according to many surveys taken in rich countries.
These tend to show that, once a country has lifted itself out of poverty,
further rises in income seem not to create a meaningful rise in the proportion of people who consider themselves as happy.
* plethora : 과잉공급

Like the moral issues surrounding suicide, the problem of euthanasia has long been in the center of thinkers' discussion.
People who favors to end the life of a terminally ill patient insist physicians only prolong the suffering of the patient.
They mean, even though he or she is facing death, the patient can choose to end his or her life to escape the unbearable pain.
But those who oppose it say there is no moral distinction between killing someone and allowing someone to die.
They regard both of them as ‘murder'.

Maimonides, the great Jewish philosopher who lived in the 12th century, was as current as the 1990s when he described the eight levels of charity.
As you read these words, ask yourself how many people measure up to these lofty standards.
Going from the lowest level of charity to the highest, here are the eight levels:
1. He who gives unwillingly.
2. He who gives cheerfully, but not enough.
3. He who gives enough, but not until he is asked.
4. He who gives before being asked, but gives directly to the poor man.
5. The poor man knows from whom he takes, but the giver does not know who is receiving.
6. The giver knows to whom he gives, but the receiver does not know the giver.
7. The giver does not know to whom he gives, nor does the poor man know from whom he receives.
8. The highest form of charity is to strengthen the hand of the poor man by giving him a loan, joining him in partnership, or training him out of his poverty, to help him establish himself.

Jimmy was not drunk, nor was he a reckless driver.
He fell asleep at the wheel, ran off the road, hit a ditch and went through the windshield.
The car flipped over on top of him.
If he had been wearing his seat belt, he would be alive today.

She had just begun an intense, love-at-first-sight relationship, only to have her lover go off to Europe three weeks later.
For seven tortured weeks she was plagued with doubts.
What if he decided he didn't love her after all?
What if he met someone else during his trip?
What if he didn't call her as soon as he returned?
Full of all these what-ifs, my friend's brain was about to short-circuit, until a wise friend of hers put things in perspective.
"Why worry? Whatever he does, he does.
Remember: You don't know until you know."
My friend stood there, awestruck by the brilliant simplicity of this observation.
There was really nothing she could do about the situation, after all.
And worrying about something before it actually happened suddenly came into focus as the waste of time and energy that it is.
In an instant, it seemed, she was free of the problem, able to settle back and take each day at a time until her lover returned, at which point things progressed just as beautifully as she could have hoped and her fears turned out to be groundless after all.

The sort of companies which invest heavily in television advertising are those which normally lead the economy out of a recession.

She argued with him about the decision.

She argued him into the decision.

As the railroad conductor entered our car, my friend discovered he had left his ticket at home.
Trying to joke his way out of the awkward situation, my friend told the conductor, "I'm not a dishonest guy. Look, my face is my ticket."
The conductor didn't miss a beat.
"And my duty," he said, "is to punch every ticket."

He was deep into debts last year, but now he's almost out of debt.

For millions of people around the world, he was, quite simply, the living symbol of
Israel. With his distinctive black eye patch and round boyish face, he was instantly
recognizable in any country, in any kind of uniform, even in disguise, which he
donned from time to time in the service of his nation's diplomacy. Soldier, statesman
and swashbuckling hero of Israel's wars with its Arab neighbors, Moshe Dayan
occupied center stage in Israel for more than 30 years. By the time he died last week
of a heart attack at 66, Dayan had largely outgrown his image as a warrior and
become an impassioned advocate of peace.

It took mankind untold ages to get out of its barbarous state.

She's grown out of her silly love.

"I have to laugh sometimes," she says. "When friends come, Jerry immediately
drags them over to show them the computer. Some may actually understand what's
going on, but most just stand there and smile and can't wait to get away."

One of the symptoms of approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that
one's work is terribly important and that to take a holiday would bring
all kinds of disaster. If I were a medical man, I would prescribe a
holiday to any patient who considered his work important. The nervous
breakdown which appears to be produced by the work is, in fact, in
every case that I have ever known of personally, produced by some
emotional trouble from which the patient attempts to escape by means
of his work. He is loath to give up his work because, if he does so,
he will no longer have anything to distract him from the thoughts of
his misfortune, whatever it may be.

It is a prevalent idea among men who are not prosperous in their occupation
that any other business is better than the one in which they are engaged.
Those who are ever ready to act on this idea, and make frequent changes
generally remain poor throughout life.

If he himself rose out of poverty, and filled a great position before he
died at the age of forty-three, this was not, I fancy, due to that
ambition to which most poor boys who afterwards achieve eminence owe
their success. He was, so far as I could judge, as free from ambition
in the ordinary sense of the word as any man who ever lived. If he rose
from position to position, it was not because he thrust himself on the
attention of his employers, but because his employers insisted on promoting
him. He was naturally a man of creative energy, a man who lived by his
imagination, and could no more help being conspicuous among ordinary human
beings than a gold coin in a plate of silver.

*emerge 벗어나다 come out:
The business is emerging from its difficulties.

The man divided against himself looks for excitement and distraction:
he loves strong passions, not for sound reasons, but because for the
moment they take him outside himself and prevent the painful necessity
of thought.
Any passion is to him a form of intoxication, and since he cannot
conceive of fundamental happiness, all relief from pain appears to
him solely possible in the form of intoxication.
This, however, is the symptom of a deep-seated malady.
Where there is no such malady, the greatest happiness comes with the
most complete possession of one's faculties. It is in the moments when
the mind is most active and the fewest things are forgotten that the
most intense joys are experienced.

He has, we may suppose, a charming house, a charming wife, and charming
children. He wakes up early in the morning while they are still asleep
and hurries off to his office.
There it is his duty to display the qualities of a great executive; he
cultivates a firm jaw, a decisive manner of speech, and an air of
sagacious reserve calculated to impress everybody except the office boy.
He dictates letters, converses with various important persons on the
phone, studies the market, and presently has lunch with some person
with whom he is conducting or hoping to conduct a deal.
The same sort of thing goes on all the afternoon. He arrives home, tired,
just in time to dress for dinner. At dinner he and a number of other
tired men have to pretend to enjoy the company of ladies who have no
occasion to feel tired yet. How many hours it may take the poor man
to escape, it is impossible to foresee.

One reason why stories are so popular in all cultures is that they are
generally easy to follow. The events of a story are usually told in the
order in which they occur-usually, but not always. Sometimes an author
may vary his or her style by presenting the incidents out of their
natural order. Then we as readers must rely on other clues to understand
the true sequence of events.

A few weeks ago at a large theater I turned to my wife and said, "The
picture is out of focus." "Be quiet," she answered. I obeyed. But a few
minutes later I raised the point again, with growing impatience. "It will
be all right in a minutes," she said in a low voice not to disturb the
audience around. I waited. It was just out of focus -- not glaringly out,
but out. So after bothering my wife throughout the first part of the
movie, I finally prevailed upon her to admit it was off, and very
annoying.

Logical song -
Tell me what we've learn.
Tell me who I am.

And this place could be much brighter than tomorrow
(** A could be much ~~ than B, if...:만약..

And if you really try, you'll find there's no need to cry.
(** there's no need to:~~할 필요가 없다)
In this place you'll feel there's no hurt or sorrow

There are ways to get there if you care enough for the living
Make a little space make a better place

Heal the world make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me

If you want to know why there's a love that cannot lie
Love is strong it only cares for joyful giving
If we try we shall see in this bliss
We cannot feel fear or dread
We stop existing and start living

Then it feels that always
Love's enough for us growing
Make a better world make a better world

Except at rare intervals of intellectual ferment, education in the past has been radically infected with inert ideas.
That is the reason why uneducated clever women, who have seen much of the world, are in middle life so much the most cultured part of the community.
They have been saved from this horrible burden of inert ideas.
Every intellectual revolution which has ever stirred humanity into greatness has been a passionate protest against inert ideas.
Then, alas, with pathetic ignorance of human psychology, it has proceeded by some educational scheme to bind humanity afresh with inert ideas of its own fashioning.

The processes of agriculture, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, our social relations, were all at one time under the dominion of religion and its high priests.
Gradually they have passed out of its control and become subjects for scientific study.

In recent years, researchers have made significant progress in nailing down the underlying science of anxiety.
In just the past decade, they have come to appreciate that whatever the factors that trigger anxiety, it grows out of a response that is hardwired in our brains.
They have learned, among other things:
·There is a genetic component to anxiety; some people seem to be born worriers.
·Brain scans can reveal differences in the way patients who suffer from anxiety disorders respond to danger signals.
·Due to a shortcut in our brain's information-processing system, we can respond to threats before we become aware of them.
·The root of an anxiety disorder may not be the threat that triggers it but a breakdown in the mechanism that keeps the anxiety response from careering out of control.

While the Census Bureau and the United States government used the term
SMSA (by 1969 there were 233 of them), social scientists were also using
new terms to describe the elusive, vaguely defined areas reaching out
from what used to be simple "towns" and "cities" . A host of terms came
into use : "metropolitan regions," "polynucleated population groups,"
"conurbations," "metropolitan clusters," "megalopolises," and so on.
"metropolitan regions," "polynucleated population groups,"
"conurbations," "metropolitan clusters," "megalopolises," 등등이다.

In savanah country huge herds of games support prides containing 20 lions or more.

But to live here lions have had to change their habits - prides are much smaller

and their home ranges are very much bigger.

The lions must wait for the oryx to leave the safety of the dunes,
which eventually they must to find food and water.
And then the lions will ambush them.

Listening is an act of caring, a selfless act that permits us to escape the isolation of our separate selves and enter into the warm circle of human relationships.
