Philadelphia lawyer 민완 변호사..
민첩한 수완의 변호사라는 말입니다. Philadelphia는 미국 펜실베니아
주의 도시이지요. lawyer 라는 것은 변호사구요. 그러면 Philadelphia
lawyer는 필라델피아 변호사인데 이것이 왜 민완 변호사라는 뜻이 되
었을까요. 흔히 as smart as a Philadelphia lawyer (필라델피아의 변
호사만큼 똑똑한) 이런 표현으로 사용이 되거든요. 즉, Philadelphia
lawyer는 유난히도 기운이 나고 빈틈없는 사람을 뜻합니다. 그런데 요
즘에 와서는 '뭔가 떳떳하지 못한 사람' 을 이야기할 때 Philadelphia
lawyer 라는 표현을 쓰지요. 그런데 본래 Philadelphia lawyer에 비유
되는 것은 큰 찬사였다고 합니다. 1800년 전에 필라델피아는 미국에서
가장 아름답고 중요한 도시였지요. 이때까지 필라델피아가 새로운 연
방 정부의 의석을 차지했고 미국 경기의 중심지였고 또 동시에 문학과
지식의 중심지였지요. 그래서 자연히 법조계의 가장 똑똑한 인물들이
이곳에 모이기 시작했습니다. 이렇게 똑똑한 사람들이 많이 모여 들었
기 때문에 항상 경쟁이 치열했고요. 그러나 무엇이든지 너무 지나치면
좋지 않은 것 처럼 수완도 너무 지나치게 되면 양심도 잃어 버리게 되
는 그런 경향이 있지요. 그래서 한때는 칭찬으로 사용이 되었던 Phil-
adelphia lawyer 라는 말이 풍자적으로 사용이 되게 된 것입니다.
