구두나 서면으로 ‘알리다’의 뜻에서 tell은 일반적인 말이며, inform(알리다, 통지하다)은 약간 격식을 차리는 딱딱한 말로, 한 사실이나 사정에 관한 지식을 어느 사람한테 직접 전하는 것을 강조한다.

관청계에서 inform이라고 하면, 정보, 지식의 일편을 주는 것뿐만 아니라, 그런 것을 알려 주었다는 것을 정보, 지식을 받는 이에게 통고하는 것까지도 말한다.

무슨 일을 inform한다면, 그저 알린다고 하는 경우보다 그 일이 한결 권위 있는 일이라고 보는 것이다. informed sources(권위 있는 소식통, 확실한 소식통)란 말은 신문에서 그저 소문(rumor, gossip)에 대한 완곡어로 쓰여지는 수가 흔하지만, 무슨 일을 단지 들은 사람보다는 믿을 만한 것이라고 일반적으 that this was their final notice.
acquaint를 ‘알리다’의 뜻으로 쓰는 것은 영국에서는 고문체이지만 미국에서는 표준적 용법이다.

utter는 음성(vocal sounds)으로 생각이나 감정을 전달하는 것을 암시한다.

반드시 변설(speech)을 가리키지는 않으므로 utter a yell처럼도 쓰이지만, 변설이 암시되는 경우에는 짧고 의미심장한 것을 의미한다.

A recent report by the New Industry Management Academy showed
that the value added by the 30 biggest business groups totaled 57,750

A recent report by the National Statistical Office indicates once
again how closely Korean demographic patterns are coming to resemble
those of advanced countries. Pinpointing the changes, it lays out the
many problems the nation has to solve.

Jeroz announced that its board of directors has authorized the buyback of $ 1 billion of its stock shares.

held today, my retirement as president and from the board of directors
was formally announced. My successor will be Mr. Christopher Rees, who
is now president of Specialty Steel Co. and one of the founding members
of General Iron & Steel Co.

As you may know, I have been with GENERAL since it was founded 17 years
ago. As such, it has been a privilege and honor to have seen the
company grow and acquire a reputation as one of the world's most modern
and efficient steel producers.

가 성장하여 세계에서 가장 근대적이고 효율적인 철강회사의 하나로 명성을 얻
