출신을 〃 〃 〃 말은 city slicker 라고 합니다.
.redneck → (=rustic) (남부의 가난한) 백인 노동자,시골 주민
교육을 받지 못하고 자기주장이 강한 사람을 가리킵니다.
.hillbilly →산간 지대에서 교육받지 못한 사람을 말합니다.

* turkey : 여기서는 '멍청한 사람'으로 쓰였습니다.(= fool)

. 이처럼 turkey는 속어로는 좋지 않은 의미가 많습니다.
[Q] "나홀로 집에II"를 보는데 거기에 'cheapskate'이 '구두쇠'라고
나오던데 왜 그렇습니까?
[A] skate가 속어로 볼품이 없고 노쇠한 말을 의미.
사람인 경우 : 인색하고 치사한 사람.
열심히 절약하는 사람이 아니라 쓸 때 안 쓰는 노랭이.
skate는 '스카이트'라는 말에서 유래되었다는 설. 스코틀랜드나 영국의
북부에서 쓰이는 스카이트 라는 말이 있는데 이것은 "자신의 의견을
존중 받지 못하는 사람"이라는 뜻으로써 경멸적인 의미를 내포.
여기에 "인색하다"라는 뜻의 cheap이라는 형용사가 붙어서 "돈쓰는데
인색해서 사람들한테 존중받지 못하는 사람"의 뜻으로 스코틀랜드에서
사용되던 말이 영어에 도입.

자는 자리에 없었습니다.
'1쪽과 2쪽이 겹쳐서 나갔나 봅니다. 담당자가 없어서 2쪽을 찾
을 수가 없군요.'라고 하려고 했는데 영어 실력 때문에 앞의 말
을 못했습니다.

그 인상은 그다지 나쁘지 않았다.

Honor Box는 미국에서 쓰이는 말로 길거리에 있는 신문자동판매기를
뜻하는 말입니다. 원래 honor는 명예, 영광, 신의.. 그런 뜻이죠.
예를 들면 give one's word of honor..하면 명예를 걸고 맹세하다
다시 얘기해서 promise, swear 맹세하다와 같은 말입니다. 그리고
be on one's honor는 명예를 걸고 맹세한 상태를 말하죠. 그리고 어떤
일에 있어서 사람들이 정직하게 규칙을 준수하고 요금을 지불할 것을
믿고 어떠한 간섭도 받지 않는 제도, 즉 honor system(명예제도)라고
하죠. 예를 들어서 미국에는 honor system에 따라서 운영되는 가게들이
있는데 이러한 가게의 손님들은 필요한 물건을 구입한 다음에 비치해둔
상자안에 적정 금액을 넣고 그냥 가면 됩니다. 또는 우리나라에서도
요즘 동사무소에 가면 서류에 필요한 인지값을 알아서 비치된 바구니에
넣고 거스름돈을 챙겨가게 되어 있는데 이것도 honor system에 따른
지불 방식이라고 볼 수 있죠. 그래서 여기서 honor box에서 honor..하는
것은 신문과 관계가 있는 것이 아니고 요금을 지불하는 방식을 두고 하는
이야기입니다. 물론 신문 자동 판매기는 알맞은 금액을 넣지 않으면
신문이 나오지 않지만 어쨌든 남의 간섭없이 필요한 물건을 구입하고
요금을 낸다는 점에서 honor system에 의해서 운영이 된다고 볼수 있죠.
