on the contrary (=opposite to, *to the contrary) : 그와는 반대로
You think me idle, but on the contrary I am very busy.
(너는 내가 게으르다고 생각하지만, 그 반대로 나는 매우 바쁘다.)

* 전화를 받을 수 없을 때
I'm afraid he's not available now.
죄송합니다. 지금 그는 전화를 받을 수 없는데요.
Sorry, he can't come to the phone right now.
죄송합니다. 지금 그는 전화를 받을 수 없는데요.
Sorry, he's tied up at the moment.
미안합니다, 그는 지금 몹시 바쁜데요.
(*) be tied up(=be busy): 바쁘다, 움직이지 못하게 되다

(3) 외국인이 보통 이상하게 느끼고 있는 것은, 한국 사람들은 거의 반드시 라고 말해도 좋을 만큼 집단으로 해외 여행을 하고, 종종 작은 깃발을 든 인솔자가 선두에 있다는 것이다.
1) 외국인이 이상하게 느끼는 것: what foreigners feel strange; what strikes foreign people as strange
2) 집단으로 해외 여행을 가다: travel abroad in a group
3) 선두에 있다: head (or lead) a procession; take the lead
→「거의 반드시 라고 해도 좋을 만큼」은 「거의 반드시」와 같은 표현이다.
- 그는 아침 식사 전에는 거의 반드시 라고 말해도 좋을 만큼 산책을 한다.
Generally he takes a walk before breakfast.
- 수상은 거의 언제나라고 해도 좋을 만큼 바쁘다.
The prime minister is busy almost all the time.
- 우리나라의 거의 어느 지역을 가더라도 축제를 볼 수 있다.
Festivals are found almost everywhere in our country.
- 긴 담화는 거의 반드시 라고 해도 좋을 만큼 일종의 고문이다.
Nine cases out of ten long speeches are a form of torture.
ANS 1) What foreigners usually feel strange is that Korean people almost always travel together abroad, led by a guide with a small flag.

(6) 오늘 만찬에 손님이 몇 사람 오기로 돼 있어서 집사람은 부엌에서 식사 준비하느라 바쁘다.
→ 손님이 몇 사람: several guests
→ ~하기로 돼 있다: be supposed (또는 expected) to ~ 또는 expect라는 동사면 됩니다.
(ANS 1) Expecting several guests this evening, my wife is busy preparing dinner in he kitchen.
(ANS 2) Since several guests are supposed to come to dinner this evening, my
wife is busily preparing dinner for them.

눈, 코 뜰새없이 바쁘다.
I'm up to my ears in work.

* be busy --ing --하느라고 바쁘다
- She is busy preparing for the exam.
그녀는 시험 준비에 바쁘다.

We live from hand to mouth 우린 그날 벌어 먹고 살기 바쁘다.
* 부모로 부터 재산을 물려받은 것은 inherit a fortune이라고 하거나
또는 born with a silver spoon in one's mouth 즉 '은숟가락을
입에 물고 태어난다'고 표현하기도 한다. 반대로 맨 손으로 열심히
일해서 자수성가하는 것은 make it on one's own이라 한다.
make it은 '성공(출세)한다'는 말이고, on one's own은 '혼자의
힘으로'라는 뜻이다. 부모로부터 물려받은 재산이 없는 사람들은
처음엔 live from hand to mouth 즉 '그날 벌어 그 날 쓰기
바쁘게 살다'가 나중에는 부자가 되기도 하는데 '그 날 벌어
그 날 쓴다'에 해당하는 말이다.
live from paycheck to paycheck
즉 '봉급에서 봉급으로 삶을 이어간다'는 표현도 많이 쓰인다.

My hands are tied up. : 바쁘다.

Although Nancy claimed to be in a great hurry, I noticed that she had time for a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk.
Nancy는 매우 바쁘다고 주장했지만 나는 그녀가 판자길을 따라 한가한 산책을 할 시간이 있음을 알았다.

자세한 설명
일반적으로 「각별」「특별」이라고 말하면, 다음과 같은 표현을
흔히 사용한다.
(1) 이번 더위는 특별하다.
This heat is exceptional. =It is awfully [or awful] hot.
(2) 오늘은 특별히 더 바쁘다.
This is an especially busy day.
(3) 특별한 용무는 없습니다.
I have nothing in particular to do.

나는 열흘 전부터 일이 바쁘다는 핑계로 안동에 있었고, 아이들은 다 서울에 있었다.
I've been in Andong for ten days under the pretext of busy work, and all the children have been in Seoul.

I'm swamped with work. (일때문에 바쁘다.)

My hands are tied now. (지금 난 바쁘다.)
