How time flies!
* Maxim에 대해서 → Time and tide wait for no man.
Time is the final equalizer.
그리고 How time flies! How time drags!
Time is really dragging today. 도

There's a legend about a beautiful creature that lives in the deep ocean.
This creature is known as the mermaid.
Nobody knows if the mermaid is a woman or a fish.
She has the upper body of a woman and the tail of a fish.
The legend says that the mermaid has a melodious voice and that her song enchants all fishermen.
Thus, when a fisherman hears her singing, he jumps in the sea waters and never comes back.

Have you ever watched waves rising and falling in the ocean? Perhaps you have thought that the water in each wave had traveled for miles.
Really, the water in each wave seldom gets far from its regular position, and in any particular part of the ocean, the water changes very little.
Most of the motion of ocean water is up and down.
The forward motion in one drop of water is given to the next drop and by this drop to the next one.
Thus, the waves move over great distances, but the water itself goes a very short distance.

The people of Kiribati are afraid that one day in the not-too-distant future, their country will disappear from the face of the earth.
Several times this year, the Pacific island nation has been flooded by a sudden high tide.
These tides, which swept across the island and destroyed houses, came when there was neither wind nor rain.
What is causing these mysterious high tides?
The answer may well be global warming.
When fuels like oil and coal are being burned, pollutants are released;
these pollutants trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere.
Warmer temperatures cause water to expand and also create more water by melting glaciers and polar ice caps.

The ocean is the earth's greatest storehouse of minerals.
In a single cubic mile of sea water there are, on the average, 166 million tons of dissolved salts, and in all the ocean waters of the earth there are about 50 quadrillion tons.
And it is in the nature of things for this quantity to be gradually increasing over the millennia,
for although the earth is constantly shifting her component materials from place to place, the heaviest movements are forever seaward.
It has been assumed that the first seas were only faintly saline and that their saltiness has been growing over the eons of time.
For the primary source of the ocean's salt is rocky mantle of the continents.
When those first rains came―the centuries- long rains that fell from the heavy clouds enveloping the young earth―they began the processes of wearing away the rocks and carrying their contained minerals to the sea.
The annual flow of water seaward is believed to be about 6500 cubic miles, this inflow of river water adding to the ocean several billion tons of salts.

Every drop of water in the ocean, even in the deepest parts, responds to
the forces that create the tides. No other force that affects the sea is
so strong. Compared with the tides, the waves created by the wind are
surface movements felt no more than a hundred fathoms below the surface.
The currents also seldom involve more than the upper several hundred
fathoms despite their impressive sweep.

The tides are a response of the waters of the ocean to the pull of the
Moon and the more distant Sun. In theory, there is a gravitational
attraction between the water and even the outermost star of the
universe. In reality, however, the pull of remote stars is so slight as
to be obliterated by the control of the Moon and, to a lesser extent,
the Sun.

Just as the Moon rises later each day by fifty minutes, on the average,
so, in most places, the time of high tide is correspondingly later each
day. And as the Moon waxes and wanes in its monthly cycle, so the height
of the tide varies. The tidal movements are strongest when the Moon is a
sliver in the sky, and when it is full. These are the highest flood
tides and the lowest ebb tides of the lunar month and are called the
spring tides. At these times the Sun, Moon, and Earth are nearly in line
and the pull of the two heavenly bodies is added together to bring the
water high on the beaches, to send its surf upward against the sea
cliffs, and to draw a high tide into the harbors.

Huge glaciers that stretch over the shallow continental shelf give birth
to icebergs throughout the year. Icebergs are not like sea ice, which is
formed when the sea itself freezes ; rather, they are formed entirely on
land, breaking off when glaciers spread over the sea. As they drift away
from the polar region, icebergs sometimes move mysteriously in a
direction opposite to the wind, pulled by subsurface currents. Because
they melt more slowly than smaller pieces of ice, icebergs have been
known to drift as far north as 35 degrees south of the equator in the
Atlantic Ocean.

To appreciate fully the diversity and abundance of life in the sea, it
helps to think small. Every spoonful of ocean water contains life, on
the order of 100 to 100,000 bacterial cells plus assorted microscopic
plants and animals, including larvae of organisms ranging from sponges
and corals to starfish and clams and much more.

The pressure exerted on the human body increases by 1 atmosphere for
every 10 meters of depth in seawater, so that at 30 meters in seawater a
diver is exposed to a pressure of about 4 atmospheres. The pressure of
the gases being breathed must equal the external pressure applied to the
body ; otherwise breathing is very difficult. Therefore all of the gases
in the air breathed by a scuba diver at 40 meters are present at five
times their usual pressure.
