(1) 노하우라는 영어 단어는 세익스피어 같은 대문호도 몰랐던 말이다. 당연한 것이 지금 세계의 유행어가 된 그 말은 미국인들이 만든 말이기 때문이다. 그러니까 「왜」를 「어떻게」로 바꾼 것이 바로 오늘날이 미국을 있게 한 열쇠였다. 나폴레옹은 「왜」전쟁을 하느냐 하는 물음 앞에서는 한낱 바보에 지나지 않았지만 「어떻게」싸워야 이기는가의 문제에 있어서는 만고의 천재였다. 그는 대포를 결합하고 해체하는 나사못의 홈들을 표준화함으로써 전쟁에서 대승을 했다. ('97 제4회 3급 인문사회 선택문제)
Such a great writer as Shakespeare was not aware of the usage of the word "know-how". "맛있습니까?"라는 물음으로, 미국이 상대를 존중하는 사회임을
엿볼 수 있는 대목이다. 미국인들은 상대의 취향을 물을 때,
delicious처럼 자신이 단정지은 표현을 쓰지 않는다.
구체적 표현은 상대가 고르도록 배려하기 때문이다.
의향을 물을 때는 "~은 어떻습니까?(How do you like ~?)"
정도가 좋으며, "Is it ~?(~입니까?)"는 '의향을 강요하는'
느낌을 준다.

② How does it taste?(맛이 어떤가요?)
③ How do you like that?(그게 맘에 드십니까?)
④ Is it tasty enough for you?(맛이 드실만 한가요?)
Why do you keep silent? (X)
"왜 말이 없는 거죠?"라는 뜻이다. 이 물음에서 'keep silent'라고
하면 "왜 감추는 거냐, 묵비권 행사 하냐?"라는 뜻이 되어 경찰 취조실
분위기가 된다. 말없어 조용한 것은 'quiet'을 써야 한다.
"조용히 해라."라고 주의를 줄 때도 "Be silent."가 아니라
"Be quiet."라고 해야 한다.

1.How would you like your meat done?
또는 How would you like meat cooked? 라고도 하는데 고기요리를 주문
하면 항상 이렇게 어느정도 요리를 해서 익혀 줄까를 묻는다. 고기문화에
익숙하지 않는 사람에게는 어색할지 모르지만 이것은 필수적인 물음이다

격식을 갖추어 다른 사람을 소개할 때는 I'd like you to meet~의 문형을
쓴다. 직역하면 "당신이 ~를 만나기를 바랍니다."의 뜻이다. I'd like는 I
would like를 줄임말이다. 강한 표현으로는 I want you to meet~.라고
말한다. "나의 어머님께 인사드려라."는 I'd lik
e you to meet my mother.라고 한다.
격식을 갖추지 않을 때는 "이 분이 스미드씨이다."는 This is Mr. Smith.처럼
This is ~의 문형을 쓴다. 현대영어에서는 How do you do. 다음의 물음표(?)
대신에(.)를 찍는다.
My belief is that all music has an expressive power, some more and some
